Good Afternoon  ,

For the past 8 months or so, I've been working with Annette Bau. She's been coaching me on three aspects of improving my business:
  • My inner game (adjusting my mindset for success), 
  • My game plan (business strategy), and 
  • My outer game (connecting with and selling to the right clients).
One of Annette's favorite techniques for aligning the mind for success is "focused breathing". Since all of her material is copyrighted and part of a paid program, it would be illegal and improper of me to share it here.

Recently I found this article from  Minda Zetlin. on the topic of focused breathing. So Minda's back with us this week discussing this simple breathing technique to calm and focus the mind. She's a regular contributor to Inc. magazine, and has also graced my articles quite regularly.

The technique involves breathing in for a count (she recommends 4) and out for a longer count (she recommends 6). She elaborates a bit on the physiological reasoning for this and discusses some variations. 


As I practice it, I:

  • Breathe in for a count of 5, imagining the things I want most in life and business,
  • Hold my breath for a count of 6, absorbing these good things, and
  • Exhale for 10, emptying my mind of negative thoughts or emotions. 
  • Repeat 3 or 4 times.
I do this at several stages in my meditation routine after I wake up and before i go to bed. It can also be a great preparation for challenging tasks, or handling potentially stressful situations.

The point is that the process is measured. It counters any tendency for rapid or shallow breathing, a common reaction to stress.
