Hi Martina,

March 14, 2024

We love to learn. And then we love to share what we've learned.

Last year our team visited New England Biochar in Eastham. There we learned about the ancient technology that helps plants, trees, and shrubs flourish.

What is Biochar? Biochar is made from organic materials like wood, crop residues, or animal manure (New England Biochar uses wood). It's produced through a process called pyrolysis, which involves heating these materials in a low-oxygen environment. This p rocess turns them into a stable form of carbon that can be added to soil.

Why use Biochar? When Biochar is added to the soil around the roots of plants it makes them grow bigger, better, stronger, faster...able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Fun fact: Bob Wells of New England Biochar grows some of the famous Eastham Turnips...his record turnip weighed 32 pounds!

New England Biochar products are a mix of the highest quality biochar, compost, earthworm castings, and more. Using biochar is like adding millions of tiny plant food factories around the roots of your plants. Biochar adsorbs nutrients that are in the soil (nutrients stick to it), and because biochar is very porous it is a great habitat for beneficial microbes to live. The microbes help break down organic matter and make nutrients more available to plants.

Bob Wells from NE Biochar will be here Saturday 3/16 to talk about his products. If you'd like to hear his talk please click here to go to our events page and register. Or scroll on for more info:

We're having a bagged goods sale this week, buy three get one free. This is a great time to stock up on soil, mulch and more. Scroll further for details.

CL Fornari will be here Sunday (3/17) to talk about plants that will attract more birds to your garden. You don't want to miss out on this free talk! See our events page or scroll on for more details.

On Cape Cod we celebrate our beautiful gardens as well as our waterways. We know that what we do in our gardens can affect those bodies of water, so we are careful about which products we use and when or where they are applied. CL Fornari Talks about fertilizing with purpose in our blog post this week...scroll on for more.
