NOTE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GINGER JOHNSON Q2, 2024

Why “Awareness Months” are so important.

While Abigail’s Arms works year-round to assist victims of violence, Awareness Month activities help us focus our community education on specific dynamics. April is both Child Abuse Awareness and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Neither is a topic that is easily discussed. Yet discussing both topics is so important if we ever want to end cycles of violence. Through local, state, and national campaigns we work to let survivors know we are here to help.

Trauma can quickly change the trajectory of a person’s life, through no fault or choice of their own, a person is thrust into a world that is chaotic and foreign to them. Our goal at Abigail’s Arms is to be the place where someone, an adult, or a child, can come to find support, guidance, and information about how to move past the trauma, begin to heal, and navigate any criminal or civil system they find themselves in.

So how can you help?

  • Reach out to have one of our staff come speak at gatherings or meetings you are involved in and learn more about violence dynamics, recognizing and speaking up, and how you can help us.
  • Come to an Agents of Change community education session.
  • Have conversations with family, friends, and co-workers – your circle of influence. By spreading the word about Abigail’s Arms and our mission, you are creating ripples of change.
  • Volunteer, donate or sponsor an event.

AWARENESS & WELL-BEING

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Sexual violence undermines communities. Over half of women and almost 1 in 3 men have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetimes. We must address all abuses of power to prevent sexual violence -- in our relationships, communities, and society.
