CYBER-SECURITY TIP OF THE WEEK
"It's 1pm - has your account been pawned?"
-by Brad Somers, Bozeman School District Tech Director

Did you know there is a website that you can check to see if your password may have been compromised on your various accounts?

There have been many websites/databases on the internet where user names and passwords have been hacked, ie. data breaches. The hackers run sophisticated programs and algorithms trying to crack passwords that are 'encrypted'. Some are successful. The hackers compile the lists and post them on the Dark Web.

Popular websites and services that you have heard of include: Edmodo,  Adobe, LinkedIn, Dropbox, Forbes, Modern Business Solutions, MySpace, NetProspex, Disqus, Bitly, NetEase, Anti Public Combo List, Exploit.ln, B2B USA Businesses, and 2,844 separate data breaches.

Spear Phishing (targeted attempts to steal sensitive information or coerce you into sending some money) is a common result of account and password cracking. We have had a couple of users who have been spear phished.

What to do if your email address shows up on the  https://haveibeenpwned.com/   website:
  1. Change your password on those sites and any other sites you may have used that password.
  2. Change your password for the address that has been compromised.
