2021 Fall General Meeting
Your participation is important! We want to hear from you as a valued Wapiti Nordic member or visitor. Please save the date for our Fall General Meeting on Saturday November 27th that will be broadcast on Zoom. A link will be sent in a separate electronic bulletin like this and also available on the Meetings & Minutes page on our website. At this meeting, we will also be seeking volunteers to join a new "Trail Development" sub committee, or email our Trail Director if interested. "See" you on the 27th!!
COVID-19 & the 2021-22 Wapiti Nordic Season
Our Board members are working steadily behind the scenes to figure out what the upcoming ski season will look like under Provincial COVID-19 protocols. We are hoping to be able to have the lodge open in some capacity and most programs operating with modifications. Stay tuned for further updates in the coming weeks.
2021- 2022 Annual Memberships now on sale!
And better still - save 10% if you purchase before November 30th! This year, the Zone 4 fee has been incorporated into the membership rates shown - so no surprises at the checkout! So the prices you see on Zone 4 will have both applied already up until Nov 30th. See our Membership page if any questions.
Highway 40 Trail Update
The Board at Wapiti Nordic is happy to announce that we have been compensated by Alberta Transportation to rebuild the trails impacted by the Highway 40 work. The alternatives for Sun Dog and Aspen D have been laid out and mulched. Some dirt work and culvert replacement remains. Impacts on the Highway 40 lit loop have been minimal so far, so we will see how it plays out this season. We are forming a sub committee to provide guidance to the Board on other trail enhancements/changes. See "Save the Date" section above.
Last call for 2020-21 Banff Mountain Film Festival Rentals ... deadline Oct 24th!
Two new programs - Coral and Turquoise - were released in September 2021, making it a total of six different programs that were available via the 2020-2021 virtual format. If you haven't seen them yet - hurry! Film descriptions and rental information is available on the Film Fest page of our website, with a percentage of proceeds returning to Wapiti Nordic. Details on the Jan 2022 Grande Prairie Banff Mountain Film Festival will be available in our November E-News.
Join us at our Ski Swap with Nitehawk - Nov 5th & 6th
Our good friends at Nitehawk have asked us to join their annual event at Evergreen Park on November 5th & 6th. Want to sell gear? Drop it off Friday 5th. Want to buy gear? Line up early Sat 6th! Be sure to check full details and times. Some Wapiti Nordic volunteers will be there to help with sizing etc.
2021/22 edition of Chicks on Sticks coming soon!
Melissa and Doris - our trusty Chicks on Sticks leaders are welcoming new skiers and our regulars back for another fun season! "Chicks" is a ladies recreational program operating Monday and Thursday evenings for those of you wanting to get out on the trails with a group of like minded women! We break into different groups to ski anywhere from 3 to 10 km. We encourage everyone to take a lesson prior to joining us if you have not skied in years or are not able to ski 3 km at a consistent pace. The program relies on volunteers to help us lead and sweep groups so you won't get lost. Thanks to all the ladies who have stepped up over the years and helped up - we couldn't do it without you. The group follows any current COVID protocols and don't forget your headlamp! As we did last year we are asking ladies to pay their Chicks fee ($15/winter season) along with their regular membership. The program will start when there is enough snow to set classic track! Ski rentals are available for a small fee. See you on the snow!!
Seeking Jackrabbit Leaders & Adult Instructors ...
We are always looking for Jackrabbits leaders and helpers, and also for instructors for adult lessons. Training (see below) is provided in these courses. What a great way to share your love of SC skiing with our community! For more information please contact Theresa.
Instructor Training coming to Wapiti Nordic!
This year, two instructor/coach training sessions will be offered in Grande Prairie on the weekend of December 10-12, 2021. The NCCP Community Coaching Course provides the skills to teach children in the Jackrabbits program to learn to ski through games and fun activities. It is a two day course. The CANSI Level One is a three day course that focusses on developing ski technique and teaching skills, to enable instructors to teach cross-country skiing to beginner level skiers. It is also a great way to improve your ski technique. Please contact Theresa ASAP if you are interested in either course.
Race Team Update
This season has started with 26 athletes on the team. We have a few spots available on the U11 team if there is any interest, please email Claire ASAP. We are gearing up for local races and with lots of plans in place for safe racing and traveling, we hope to hit the road also this season. We thank you for your encouragement and support of these amazing athletes and we look forward to seeing you out on the trails!
Biathlon Update
The Biathlon Program is up and running. If you have an interest in joining this group please contact Michael Morgan. We are planning to host a Provincial Calforex Cup on February 5th & 6th 2022. Biathlon Alberta is developing the protocols to be able to conduct competitions in the current environment. Please contact Michael if you are interested in helping volunteer for this weekend.
2021 Don't Get Lost in the Woods trail run a success!
Kudos to Race Director Lori Brough for getting creative (once again!) with the 2021event to meet COVID-19 protocols and still manage to host a very successful event with just over 100 participants staggered over multiple start times. And special thanks to all those who participated this year - be it the first or a repeat visit! See you next September!
