2017 Mayor's Citywide Food Drive Challenge

I am pleased to inform you that Mayor Crombie has launched the 2017 Mayor's Citywide Food Drive Challenge as a part of The Mississauga Food Bank's Annual Thanksgiving Campaign. The challenge begins on Saturday, September 16th, and the goal is to raise 225,000 lbs of food and $125,000 by October 13. Last year, the drive raised 219,975 lbs of food and $123,531!

For the 15% of Mississauga residents who live in poverty, providing adequate nutritious food for their families is a daily struggle. The Mississauga Food Bank, through its member agencies including Compass Food Bank, Salvation Army Erin Mills Food Bank, Seva Food Bank, St. Mary's Food Bank and many more exist to help ease this struggle.  Eden Food for Change is once again actively participating in this year's campaign and will receive all food donations from Fire Stations 115, 122 and 111 for the duration of the campaign.  If you are able, there are many ways that you may participate in this campaign:
  • Join the #OneBagChallenge:
    • o   Fill a bag with nutritious non-perishable food
    • o   Take a photo or video as you deliver your donation to your local grocery store, fire station or The Mississauga Food Bank
    • o   Post your photo or video on social media and challenge five people to do the same within 48 hours. Make sure to use the hashtag #OneBagChallenge!
    • Join us at the Thanksgiving Campaign Launch on Saturday, September 16th, 2017 at Streetsville Village Square, taking place from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, remarks will take place at 2:00 PM. Families can bring their donations and enjoy free food, entertainment and family friendly activities.

Register for City's Driveway Windrow Snow Clearing Program

Registration for the City of Mississauga's Driveway Windrow Snow Clearing Program is open until 9 p.m. on Friday, November 10 for residents 65 years and older and people with disabilities. The program provides assistance to eligible applicants by clearing windrows after snow plowing operations have ended.

This program runs from November 27, 2017 to March 30, 2018. The windrow snow clearing service will plow a space approximately three metres (ten feet) wide at the end of the driveway for one car to pass. The service is provided within 36 hours after the end of a snow storm, once all streets have been plowed. Clearing to bare pavement is not guaranteed.

Residents 65 years and older and people with disabilities can apply for the program. The cost of the program is either $200 or free if the applicant meets financial assistance criteria. The program is offered to 300 eligible applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications for the Driveway Windrow Snow Clearing Program are available online or at all community centres, the Recreation Customer Service Centre (located at the Mississauga Central Library) and the Mississauga Seniors' Centre.  For more information, please visit the program website at www.mississauga.ca/drivewaywindrowprogram.   Top

One Million Trees Mississauga Update

I am very pleased to report that the City's One Million Trees program has reached a milestone of 250,000 trees planted; as of today, that total is 254,087 trees!  That puts us almost an entire year ahead of our targets for each year to reach our goal of 1,000,000 by the year 2032!

Also, to celebrate Canada 150 and One Million Trees Mississauga, the City has created a special 2017 Earth Day video, which can be found here: https://youtu.be/Y-mj-cLtsMU.  I hope you enjoy watching this great video!  For more information about One Million Trees Mississauga, please visit www.onemilliontrees.ca.   Top
