Dear Residents of Ward 3,
During the month of February, we marked a significant achievement in our community with the grand reopening of the revitalizd Burnhamthorpe Community Centre. Joined by over 4000 residents and community groups, the day was filled with various activities and performances, including a traditional ceremony led by Elder Gary Sault and a rendition of the new Mississauga Anthem by Mikey Bloom. A heartfelt thank you to all staff and the entire community, whose dedication made this event a great success!
In addition, we recognized February as Black History Month, a time for learning, contemplation, and celebration. Throughout this month, in collaboration with the Black Caucus Alliance, the City of Mississauga honoured and acknowledged the invaluable contributions and achievements of our Black community through a diverse range of events, activities, and programs.
I would like extend my sincere gratitude to all those who attended my Free Fun Skate in February and to all those who participated in the Coyote Information Session, earlier this month.

During Black History Month in February, I had the privilege of interviewing Norma Nicholson, a long time Ward 3 resident prolific, self-published author, youth advocate, public speaker, educator, mentor, and mental health expert. I am so proud to share that Norma's latest book, "END Incarceration of Black and Minority Youth" is now available at the Burnhamthorpe Library.
Norma’s impactful work includes speaking engagements focused on supporting vulnerable youth and families, collaborating with community partners to effect positive change, and connecting literature with education to empower minority families.
I extend my gratitude to Norma for sharing her insights on the significance of Black History Month.

I would like to congratulate St. Basil Catholic Elementary School on receiving the Wilde Wood School Zone Safety Award for 2023.
St. Basil is one of the four schools that received the Wilde Wood School Safety Zone Award for their outstanding leadership and dedication in promoting school zone safety and active transportation.
I had the honour of visiting St. Basil for their monthly school assembly to celebrate the great news and how they continue to promote respect and kindness in the community.

Through our joint efforts, we are not only enhancing the safety net within our community but also reinforcing the sense of solidarity and shared responsibility that defines a resilient and secure neighborhood.

I have arranged a Community Meeting on Thursday, March 21st at 7:00 pm at Burnhamthorpe Community Centre (Applewood Auditorium) – 1500 Gulleden Drive. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss a proposed development located at 1699 Dundas Street East, by Bousfields Inc.. The proposed development is for a five-storey long term care building at the northwest corner of the site, with the existing church and chapel building to remain.
The applicant is intending to acquire approvals through the provincial Community Infrastructure and Housing Accelerator (CIHA) process, which will be explained at the meeting.

Mississauga's 50th Anniversary Mural | |

The City's public art program commissions professional artists to create visual art for public spaces.
To celebrate Mississauga's 50th anniversary, the public art program is commissioning a new large-scale mural on the concert tower of the Living Arts Centre. The mural will thank and acknowledge the Anishinaabe peoples who came to be known as the Mississaugas of the Credit for our city's name. It will also honour 50+ years of Mississauga's history and celebrate our city's exciting future.
The public art program invited professional artists and artist teams to submit credentials and expressions of interest through an open competition. Submissions were evaluated by an arms-length art selection committee, and three artists and artist teams were selected to develop a proposal for the mural.
We're inviting Mississauga residents to participate in each artist's proposal development. In these videos, the artists introduce themselves and their artistic practice and ask residents questions of their choice.
We encourage you to share your answers to their questions so we can all collaboratively envision a mural that speaks to the unique characteristics and communities of Mississauga.

The City of Mississauga is searching for its fifth Poet Laureate to fill a two-year term starting this April until March 2026.
The role of the Poet Laureate is to elevate the status of poetry, literary arts and writers within their community and beyond. This honourary position recognizes a poet who writes excellent poetry or spoken word and has written on themes that are relevant to Mississauga’s residents.
Mississauga’s current Poet Laureate, Ayomide Bayowa,will conclude his term this spring.
Interested applicants are asked to submit their applications by 4:30 p.m. on March 1.

February marked Black History Month – a time of education, reflection and celebration. This month, the City of Mississauga, in partnership with the Black Caucus Alliance, will continue to recognize and celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of Mississauga’s Black community through a variety of events, activities and programs.
Throughout Black History Month, the community is invited to take part in the conversation and more importantly, to learn and develop a deeper understanding of the history of people of African descent in Canada and Mississauga. By-election for Mississauga Mayor to Take Place June 10, 2024 | |

Mississauga City Council approved the 2024 by-election schedule to fill the Mayor’s seat. The date of the by-election for Mayor is Monday, June 10, 2024. Council officially declared the Mayor’s seat vacant on January 17, 2024 and will pass the required by-law to hold the by-election at a special Council meeting on March 6, 2024.
In accordance with legislation, when a Mayor seat becomes vacant at this point in the term of office, a by-election must be held to fill the vacancy. In Mississauga, the vacancy was created by the resignation of former Mayor Bonnie Crombie, which took effect on January 12, 2024.
By-election schedule
- March 6, 2024 – Candidate nomination period opens at 3 p.m. for candidates interested in running in the by-election for Mayor
- April 26, 2024 – Candidate nomination period will close at 2 p.m.
- May 24 and May 25, 2024 – Advance Poll days will be held at the Civic Centre
- June 1, 2024 and June 2, 2024 – Advanced Polls open at locations across the city
- June 10, 2024 – Voting Day
Acting Mayor
Until the vacancy is filled, Councillors rotate into the position every two months on an ascending basis by ward.

City Invests $4.7 Million to Support Community, Culture and Live Music in Mississauga | |
|
Mississauga City Council approved $4.7 million in grant funding to support various community and cultural groups, including live music presenters in Mississauga.
As a nod to the City’s 50th anniversary, this year’s Culture Projects Grant theme is Celebrate 50. This theme is designed to help arts and culture groups celebrate Mississauga’s rich and diverse communities through their unique cultural practices. It encourages projects that share underrepresented stories and histories related to Mississauga, including those that emphasize Indigenous worldviews, creative and artistic methods and presentation practices.
2024 also marks the second year of the Live Music Grant pilot program, which supports for-profit concert presenters as a part of the City’s Music Strategy.

Mississauga Welcomes Provincial Investment in Two Important Transit Projects | |
|
The Provincial government announced plans to support two key transit priorities for Mississauga – enhancing GO Train service along the Milton Line with two-way, all-day service and reinstating the two-kilometre Downtown Loop as part of the Hazel McCallion Line (Hurontario LRT). The City of Mississauga looks forward to working with the Province, Metrolinx and the Federal government to implement these key city-building initiatives.
On the Hurontario corridor, the addition of the downtown loop is welcome news for the City as it will support the growth of Mississauga’s downtown core, which is projected to double in population in the next 20 years. More than 70,000 people and more than 10,000 new jobs will come to Mississauga’s downtown. People will need to move to and from the core and the downtown loop will be an important way to do this.
Regionally connected public transit is essential to support the City’s future growth and development. When Mississauga signed the provincial housing pledge in March 2023 and released its housing plan, “Growing Mississauga,” the City requested the provincial government make investments in essential infrastructure, like the downtown loop and all-day, two-way GO service on the Milton Line. The City has long advocated for both projects and is pleased to see them green lit to proceed.

MiWay Service Changes Starting February 26 | |

Starting from Monday, February 26, MiWay will introduce the following changes to its services:
- Route 35 will have more frequent service
- Route 34 will be cancelled and Routes 9, 49A, 68 will be updated to maintain coverage of areas serviced by the cancelled 34
- Routes 7 and 26 will have increased weekend service

Reminder: Please Do Not Feed Wildlife | |

It’s not uncommon to see people feeding wildlife, especially birds, throughout Mississauga. However, while feeding birds, like pigeons, can seem harmless, it can have negative consequences including serious health and safety concerns for residents and birds.
Feeling the urge to feed the birds? Please don’t. Think twice before you toss that next breadcrumb.
Feeding wildlife can encourage them to enter urban areas, increasing their chances of being involved in accidents, potentially leading to property damage, injury or even death.
The City’s Animal Services team works to educate and inform the public about the dangers of feeding wildlife. They enforce regulations prohibiting animal feeding in public areas and work with others in the community, like private business owners, to help promote responsible and safe interactions with our wildlife.
Next time you want to feed the birds, think twice and remember that observing wildlife from a distance and allowing them to fend for themselves supports the well-being of both animals and our community.

During the month of February, we illuminated the Mississauga Clock Tower in blue and yellow, symbolizing solidarity on the second anniversary of the extensive invasion of Ukraine.
This gesture pays tribute to honour the people of Ukraine, as well as to the Ukrainian community who have embraced Mississauga as their home.
We continue to echo the ongoing call for peace and resolution to the conflict. Slava Ukraini!

Yard Waste Collection Begins the Week of March 4 in Peel | |

Yard waste collection begins the week of March 4 in Peel, with the cities of Brampton and Mississauga receiving weekly yard waste collection and urban areas in the Town of Caledon receiving bi-weekly yard waste collection. Rural areas of Caledon will have yard waste picked up on designated Fridays.
Residents can check their collection calendar to find their pickup day or sign up to receive free weekly waste collection reminders at peelregion.ca/waste/reminders.
Reminders:
- Yard waste must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day.
- Put yard waste at the curb in kraft yard waste bags (plastic bags not accepted), or containers that are clearly labelled "yard waste" by marker or sticker.
Peel Region no longer accepts grass clippings at the curb or at Community Recycling Centres.

Peel Region Partners with OneChild to Combat Human Trafficking | |

In honour of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day today, Peel Region’s Anti-Human Sex Trafficking Program proudly announces a collaboration with OneChild, the first organization empowering a movement of children and youth to act against the sexual exploitation of children, including child sex trafficking, through prevention education, advocacy and mobilization, survivor care, and survivor empowerment.
As part of this commitment, Peel Region will be amplifying OneChild’s '#Beh1nd the Scr3ens' message in Cineplex movie theatres across the region. ‘#Beh1ndTheScr3ens’ is the first-ever, nation-wide, youth-led awareness campaign against child sex trafficking. It was created by youth, and informed by Meta, to educate youth about how predators like sex traffickers try to take advantage and exploit children and youth, especially online.
Peel Region works in tandem with community partners, and various organizations throughout Peel and the Greater Toronto Area to combat human trafficking and minimize victimization. Peel Region proudly announces its inclusion on Forbes' esteemed list of Canada's Best Employers. This recognition highlights Peel's commitment to creating a workplace environment that prioritizes employee well-being, promotes professional growth, and embraces inclusivity despite concerns of a potential dissolution last year.
The annual list released by Forbes in partnership with Statistica Inc., identifies best employers based on independent surveys from over 40,000 Canada-based employees working for companies employing at least 500 people within Canada. Participants were asked to assess their employers across various criteria, including opportunities for advancement, gender pay equity, and managerial effectiveness in overseeing direct reports.

Peel Regional Staff presented the Year in Review of Peel's 2023 Accomplishments and Awards at Regional Council today. The report recognizes the achievements, financial accomplishments, awards, and recognition received in 2023.
This report celebrates the Region's success despite last year's uncertainty, including the introduction of Bill 112 and the possible dissolution of Peel Region.

- Peel's drinking water system received the highest possible inspection rating of 100% from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
- Delivered water and wastewater services at a rate which is 30% lower than the GTA average per household.

Secured 50 Zero Emission Vehicles for Peel Region and Peel Regional Police, reducing an estimated 418 tonnes of GHG emissions - equivalent to taking 128 gasoline-powered cars off the road.
- Achieved a customer satisfaction rating of 97% for waste management services.
- Developed Canada's first emotion-based dementia training for first responders.

I visited the Peel Regional Paramedic Services and experienced a day in the life as a Paramedic.
From the initial stages of recruitment as a student and hiring, to the Logistic Technicians stocking an ambulance, followed by a 911 call with a Paramedic at the GTAA, and ending at Trillium Health Partner’s Hospital discussing the continuation of patient care through Community Paramedics.

Peel Region and Peel Regional Police Raise $269,000 for United Way | |
|
Peel Region announced that employees of Peel Region and Peel Regional Police Service raised a combined total of $268,130 in the 2023 United Way fundraising campaign. Peel employees exceeded the campaign fundraising goal, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to supporting Peel’s communities.
Regional Chair Nando Iannicca presented two cheques totalling $268,130 to Anita Stellinga, Chief of Staff & Corporate Secretary of United Way Greater Toronto on behalf of Peel employees.
Peel Region is one of United Way’s longest-standing partners with 45 years of continuous fundraising history. These funds support United Way in delivering services that meet the urgent needs of Peel residents who have been affected by economic downturns, unaffordability and the inequities that divide our community.
Through these donations, Peel employees help those in need in our community and unite under a worthy cause. United Way Greater Toronto supports 71 agencies that deliver more than 90 programs to communities across Brampton, Caledon, and Mississauga. Last year, over 300,000 Peel residents received a helping hand from United Way Greater Toronto.

Peel Regional Police Launches NG-911 in 911 Communications Centre | |

Peel Regional Police is excited to share that we are the first Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) in Canada to officially launch Next Generation-911 (NG-911) services!
The launch on February 21st, 2024, is a significant milestone for our service, our outstanding team of 911 operators and the residents of Peel Region.
The new 9-1-1 system will allow emergency call follow-ups through an automated process, freeing up time for call takers who can focus efforts on actual emergencies. Members of the public who call 9-1-1 accidentally can expect to receive an automated callback with instructions to either acknowledge the misdial or indicate if they have an emergency.
Implementing NG-911 will allow us to answer calls in a modern age and provide communications swiftly and accurately to all first responders. It will also support PRP’s comprehensive and ongoing work towards substantially decreasing wait times in emergency situations. Through voice, text and future video submissions, NG-911 will provide essential situational awareness to first responders with critical information at their fingertips. It will also allow us to address 911 misuse by differentiating between legitimate 911 calls and misuse calls.
Peel Regional Police making history as the first PSAP to launch NG-911 services in Canada is a testament to our commitment of becoming the most progressive and innovative police service. This platform provides PRP the ability to enable new types of service delivery models in the future that will further support the Region of Peel’s Community Safety and Well-Being Framework and Priorities.
During this transition period, there will be no interruption of the 911 system to callers, nor will any member of the public have to do anything different when calling for help. PRP asks the public to please not “test” call the system as it will increase delay times and could compromise public safety.

If you are a family member or friend of someone who has been affected by pregnancy or infant loss during your perinatal journey, we know how overwhelming it can be. We also know that there is no limit on grief, and that grief is as unique as the person experiencing it. Join us for an evening where we will explore the profound and painful experience of pregnancy and infant loss, grief, and how to be of support to someone you care about who has experienced a loss.
In this workshop we will explore the experience of pregnancy and infant loss, grief, and how to be of support to someone you care about who has experienced a loss.
An in-person support group for parents who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss will be starting in the coming months. Jodi Rouah, Registered Social Worker will be facilitating the group.

MIAG Centre For Diverse Women & Families
ECCW Achievement Celebration

This program focuses on promoting mental health and well-being in the community to reduce the stigma and increase awareness.
The two components of the project are the educational workshop series and the counselling services.The educational courses offer five different courses that address mental health.
MIAG has established partnerships with several agencies to which referals are sent. Their intake worker assesses the client's needs and completes the necessary referral forms, directing them to the appropriate counsellor based on their specific requirements.

Blooming Boulevards Free Pollinator Garden Availability | |

Blooming Boulevards is now accepting applications for free boulevard (and right of way) pollinator gardens for 2024.
Mississauga residents are eligible to receive up to 50 low-maintenance plants for sun or shade, that are native to the Credit Watershed area. These beautiful, easy-care wildflowers withstand salt and drought, reduce runoff, and will provide pollinators with food and shelter throughout the year.
All services - consultation, site visit and planting design, ongoing advice and up to 50 native pollinator plants - are free.

The application period ends on May 10, or after our 100-garden maximum has been reached - whichever comes first!
