The City of Santa Ana is planning to use $142.9 million from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 to launch Revive Santa Ana, a comprehensive pandemic recovery program that also will allow the City to reimagine the services it provides.
The Santa Ana City Council was presented with a broad outline for Revive Santa Ana and Councilmembers each shared their visions for how the funds could be used. Among their ideas were investments in parks and greenspace, early childhood programs, bridging the digital divide, making services more accessible, and planning for the City’s long-term financial stability.

CRECE Urban Farm
Did you know Ward 3 has its own urban farm? CRECE (Community in Resistance for Ecological & Cultural Empowerment) is a community-based farm in Santa Ana, based out of the First Congregational Church of Santa Ana at 2555 Santiago St. CRECE is empowering the community through education & hands-on experience in the creation & maintenance of environmentally sustainable organic farms. Their vision is to create a healthy, equitable, and sustainable food system for future generations in Santa Ana. CRECE is rooted in economic development, community ownership, policy advocacy, nutrition and health, and community cohesion.

AH! MOSQUITOES!
Summer is just around the corner, and that means spending as much time as we can outdoors in our beautiful city! The downside of outside? Mosquitoes. Nobody likes mosquitoes buzzing around, nor the itchy bites or diseases they carry. Learn more about preventing these buggers from ruining our summer! The article linked below was written by a Ward 3 resident, Les Hall. It has some helpful hints and tips about preventing and eliminating mosquitoes.
Mosquito control is a shared responsibility. Everyone should do their best to eliminate ALL standing water from where they live, including indoors (think houseplant bases)!
Remember: mosquitoes reproduce in standing water and can thrive in a pool as small as a bottlecap. Tip over any containers with standing water, toss trash and recyclables in the proper bins, and take action against mosquitos!

Chicano Mentoring Association Publishes Video to Document the History of The Santa Ana Zoo
Local nonprofit Chicano Mentoring Association has created a wonderful new documentary about the Santa Ana Zoo that you can watch above on YouTube. This youth-created film is part of their “Cinta Project,” which is dedicated to the art, development and preparation of film making.
The Santa Ana Zoo empowers the community to preserve nature through fun, adventure, and learning. The zoo has been known as "a jewel of Orange County" since it opened in 1952. Today, this small zoo is an oasis in the city where families can play, learn, and spend time connecting with nature together. Featuring plants and animals of the world, the Santa Ana Zoo is home to many species of primates and a variety of endangered species. Did you know? Residents of the City of Santa Ana receive FREE admission to the Santa Ana Zoo on the Third Sunday of every month! Proof of residency (such as a utility bill or ID with your Santa Ana address) is required for free admission.

Arbor Day Celebration
On Arbor Day, April 30th, several communities joined together to plant 5 California Live Oak trees in Santiago Park! Stanbridge University provided the trees, volunteers from the Orange County Conservation Corp dug the holes, and Park Services staff provided instructions on how to plant the trees as well as tree stakes and planting materials. We are grateful for all those who participated and are eager to see these native trees grow in our park!

Newhope Library is Open!
The Newhope branch of the Santa Ana Public Library reopened on April 9th!
Location: 122 N. Newhope St.
Hours: Monday-Friday, 10am-6pm
The library was updated to include:
- An improved collection of books, audiobooks, and movies for children and young adults
- New library furniture featuring fun designs and colors
- A media lab featuring cutting-edge tech and STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, art, mathematics) based programming, including a 3D printer.

Planned Parenthood (PP):
PP is an important resource for our residents! They provide many services for reproductive health, most at no cost to the patient. And, our local clinic is in Ward 3! I joined with the PP team and have been working on lobbying efforts to share and discuss the importance of telehealth services, clinic security, patient confidentiality, and health equity.

United American Indian Involvement:
I supported their personal protective equipment (PPE) drive and participated in an event to distribute free PPE, $50 food cards, goodie bags, fried bread, and college resources to local native people.

Orange County Fire Authority, Protecting Santa Ana |

During April 20, 2021 council session, I had the privilege of recognizing Captain Robert Richardson for his 35 years of service with the Orange County Fire Authority. I was able to pin his new badge and share Capt. Richardson's commitment to Santa Ana families.
I’ve had a great time getting to know Capt. Richardson, and I thank him for his commitment to public safety.

On April 15, I was invited to a private ceremony in honor of Fire Apparatus Engineer Michael Peterson. Michael is a firefighter with the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), where he's worked for 14 years. Engineer Paterson continually exceeds expectations, and he is also an active member of the OCFA’s Honor Guard and Battalion 9’s Fire Explorer Program. We celebrated OCFA’s Best and Bravest, and thank Michael for always going above and beyond the departments expectations. |

Resolution on Anti-Asian Hate |
The City of Santa Ana acknowledges how racism and discrimination have adversely impacted Asians in America for many generations and continue to do so to this day. We welcome, honor, and respect the contributions of all our residents and acknowledge and embrace their differences. We thrive on the diversity of our residents, including our residents of Asian descent, and we desire to demonstrate our commitment to our residents by unequivocally stating that we will condemn racism, xenophobia, and hate against Asians and Pacific Islanders in America.
The City of Santa Ana stands in solidarity with our Asian community in its fight against hate and will work to ensure that all members of our Asian community are treated with dignity and respect. The City Council approved this resolution and directed the Police Chief to include hate crime reporting on their website.

The Santa Ana Neighborhood Block Beautification Contest (NBBC) is sponsored by the City of Santa Ana Public Works Agency. The contest is designed to encourage and promote community involvement in keeping Santa Ana a beautiful place to live, work, and play. It will recognize and reward residents of winning neighborhood blocks whose properties reflect their community pride and have aesthetically pleasing improvements. All residents are encouraged to participate! |

Small Business Administration Restaurant Rescue
The Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Isabel Guzman announced SBA will begin accepting Restaurant Revitalization Fund registrations on Friday, April 30th at 9am ET and open applications on Monday, May 3 at 12pm ET. The online application will remain open to any eligible establishment until all funds are exhausted.

Santa Ana is creating our very first Parks Master Plan to guide our investment in parks, facilities, trails, and open space. This is a long-range plan that will help prioritize park projects for the next ten years.
The Santa Ana Parks Master Plan "PMP" will:
- Include opportunities for community and stakeholder involvement, including a public survey, to ensure the Master Plan reflects the needs of our residents
- Involve an Advisory Board to inform Master Plan decisions
- Provide an overarching investment strategy to address high-priority, ongoing, and unmet park system needs
- Address park access and equity issues on a citywide scale
- Recommended park and facility improvement projects and examine park maintenance issues
- Establish directions to enhance parks, recreation facilities, trails, events, and programs to support community livability, park safety, trail connectivity, health and wellness, and our quality of life.

COVID-19 Funeral Assistance
Sadly, we have lost many lives during this pandemic. Families who are grieving shouldn’t have to struggle to pay for funeral expenses, too. Thankfully, new federal laws are offering help with this. FEMA will now provide financial assistance for COVID-19-related funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020.
