Encampments in Mississauga: Compassionate, co-ordinated solutions
Homelessness, including encampments in parks and public spaces, continues to affect individuals across Mississauga due to factors like job loss, mental health challenges, and a shortage of affordable housing.
Mississauga’s approach centers on dignity and respect for all residents. In June 2025, Peel Region Council approved a human rights-based Coordinated Homeless Encampment Response. This collaborative effort between local municipalities, police, and outreach agencies prioritizes voluntary relocation, provides on-site support with food and hygiene products, and establishes ‘No Encampment Zones’ in unsafe public areas.
While Peel’s shelters are currently over capacity and funding remains a challenge, the City is taking proactive steps. A new $44 million Community Improvement Plan aims to encourage affordable rental housing construction. Services like the Open Window Hub offer a safe space where vulnerable residents can access social workers, mental health support, and essential resources such as food and referrals.
Community members can support these efforts by reporting non-emergency concerns to 311 and reaching out to the Peel Street Outreach helpline at 1-877-848-8481 for assistance with unhoused individuals.
Additional supports include emergency shelters, shower access passes available at City recreation centers, food banks, and transitional housing programs for youth.
Mississauga remains committed to collaborative, compassionate solutions that balance the needs of people experiencing homelessness with community safety. By working with regional partners and provincial and federal governments, the City strives to ensure everyone has access to safe, stable housing and supportive services.
