Ward 9 Councillor's Report April  2014 - Vol 10

Dear Neighbour:

It looks as if Spring is finally here and most of the snow and ice has finally melted.  Our crews continue to clean up all the debris left over from the December ice storm so please be patient.

April is a very exciting month in Meadowvale with the big celebrations of the Meadowvale Theatre's 25th Anniversary on the 25th, 26th and 27th.

I hope you will be able to join me and members of the Meadowvale Theatre Advisory Board who have worked hard over the last six months planning a weekend for everyone to showcase our wonderful arts facility.

The celebrations start on Friday April 25th with a SOLD OUT free event for youth.  "Sauga Stars" hosted by famous punk rock band Billy Talent will showcase Mississauga's leading youth artists.

On Saturday night, Meadowvale's own broadway star Lisa Horner will host a gala
celebration of 25 years of theatre.  Tickets are still available for only $35.  Please click here to purchase your tickets.

On Sunday, April 27th, please join me and the board as we host a FREE Open House for the community.  I will be dishing up a free BBQ and popcorn and there will be children's activities, games, live performances on stage and much more including a special anniversary cake.  You can find information about all three events in the "Ward 9 News" section in this newsletter and online at www.mt25anniversary.com.

This Saturday April 12, please join me at the Argentia Superstore and support Eden Community Food Bank by helping us "Cram a Cruiser" with food.  I will be joining the Peel Police 11 Division staff and volunteers from 11am to 3 pm so drop by and say hello and make a contribution.

Remember to check the Ward 9 website at www.ward9.ca for more events and information on what's going in in our community.

And as always my staff and I are here to help you with any City or Regional issues.  Just send me an email to [email protected] or call 905-896-5900.

Yard
Yard Maintenance Subsidy Increased for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities dealing with Ice Storm Debris

Council has increased the annual Yard Maintenance Subsidy to help residents most in need deal with tree debris from the recent ice storm.

This regular program provides a subsidy of up to $200 on a per-household, per-year basis to help Mississauga's most vulnerable residents with the costs of grass-cutting in the spring and summer, as well as snow-clearing in the winter.

This year, the yearly subsidy, for seniors and people with disabilities who receive government income supplements, will be increased to provide an additional $200 for costs incurred to deal with the ice storm tree debris.

Click here to apply and for more information about both subsidy programs.

Eden Community Food Bank's Fresh Product Box Program

Eden Community Food Bank is offering residents a great way to support the food bank and buy fresh fruit and vegetables.

This program is intended to  encourage everyone to eat healthier by increasing the amount of fresh produce coming into your homes.

Every Friday morning the Food Bank buys fresh fruit and vegetables from farmers and distributors at The Ontario Food Terminal at less than wholesale prices. The prices are very low and these savings are passed on to anyone interested.

There are two sizes of boxes: $10.00 (at this time of the year, it probably represents $20-$30 of produce, based on grocery store prices) and $20.00 (approximately $40-$65 in the supermarket)

To order your fresh produce box, email [email protected] each week.  Orders must be received no later than Thursdays at 5:00 pm.

A volunteer will email you a confirmation on the Thursday afternoon. Pick-up is Friday afternoon at 3185 Unity Drive from noon - 4:00 pm. If you can organise an order of over 15 boxes, please contact Eden about the possibility of delivery.

The MCC is still on schedule to close for renovations in July of 2014 when River Grove Community Centre re-opens.

As well, Meadowvale Library will be moved to the community centre from the nearby Meadowvale Town Centre. The community centre will have a larger fitness area, new meeting rooms and program space, a new gym and a new therapeutic pool.  It will also have a teaching kitchen and will start offering cooking classes.

2014 ChangeTheWorld - Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge

The ChangeTheWorld - Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge is a call to action for youth to get involved in their community. From April 6 to May 19, 2014 all across Ontario, youth between the ages of 14 to 18 are invited to get involved in local community events, or to create events of their own to promote or support a cause that they feel really passionate about.

ChangeTheWorld is an opportunity for young people to connect to community organizations which can provide them with an awesome experience and lasting memories. It also lets youth take the initiative on causes they feel really passionate about.

Across Ontario, over the last six years, close to 100,000 youth have participated in ChangeTheWorld contributing to almost 435,000 volunteer hours! Last year, locally, Volunteer MBC engaged over 7,264 youth in 167 events, which totaled an astounding 25,521 volunteer hours! That was pretty amazing, but this year we're pushing the boundaries to the furthest it can go.
