Dear Neighbour:

What an exciting summer with Mississauga hosting the 2016 Ontario Summer Games from August 11 - 14.

Working on the host committee, I got to see how hard our staff worked behind the scenes  organizing  and keeping things running.

Our volunteers were just simply amazing!!! We are so lucky to have had almost 1000 volunteers and of course the 3,500 athletes that participated were outstanding - some future stars emerged throughout the competitions!

This was the biggest Ontario Games ever and I am so proud that we were the city selected to host.

Another exciting event took place on August 9th when I travelled to Midland to accept the flag as the host city for the 2018 Ontario 55+ Summer Games.  Once the dust settles from the OSG, we will start planning for this next big event.

This fall will be very busy as I start off with my annual Seniors' Fair on September 13th at the new Meadowvale Community Centre followed by the grand opening of our new Union Park at the north east corner of Tenth Line and Aquitaine on September 24th.

I am most excited about the re-opening of the Meadowvale Community Centre which has been under construction for two years and the Meadowvale Library that will now be located in the new building!  The centre re-opens to the public on September 6th.  Please drop by in the morning and join me for some complimentary refreshments.

I look forward to hosting the grand re-opening community celebration on October 22nd. All details for these three events are in my newsletter.

As always, remember that children are back in school in September so please drive with caution.  I wish everyone a safe and Happy Labour Day and look forward to having you join me at all Ward 9 events.

In the event that you are unable to view this
e-newsletter please note that there is always a link on the front page of my website  www.ward9.ca to the newsletter on the left in the Upcoming Events section.

As always, my staff and I are here to help you with any City or Regional issues.  Just send me an email to  [email protected] or call  905-896-5900 and check the Ward 9 website at  www.ward9.ca for ongoing updates.

Lake Aquitaine Splash Pad Update

Construction was completed a few weeks ago at the new splash pad at Lake Aquitaine and the park trail re-opened.  Thank you for your patience as the construction work proceeded.

Staff are testing the splash pad this week and plan to open it to the public on the same day as the Meadowvale Community Centre on September 6, 2016.

Please note that all splash pads in Mississauga continue to operate and are targeted to close
mid to late September weather permitting.
"Please Slow Down" Lawn Sign Campaign

Some years ago, the Road Safety Committee of which I was a member suggested signage that residents could use to remind motorists to slow down.

Nothing was done until this year when our staff purchased, with Council approval, a number of these signs that had in fact been made in other cities.

Each ward has a number of signs and I will be pleased to provide them to residents who wish to carry out a safety blitz on their street.

In order for this to be effective, there should be a number of signs in one location for a short period of time.  Over time this type of campaign starts to lose impact and it is important to keep it fresh.

It is also important to match the signs with information on social media and in newsletters and printed media.  I will be distributing the signs mid September and will be issuing a media release for the Ward 9 Safe Streets campaign at that time.

If you wish your street to be part of this upcoming campaign, please email me at [email protected]  or call me at
905-896-5900 to get on the list.  You will be notified prior to the campaign start of where to pick up your signs.

Meadowvale Water Tower Update

Cranes are on site for the removal of the Meadowvale water tower at Meadowvale GO station.
The tower is no longer needed for water and will be used in future as a permanent transmission tower for Peel Regional Police. I have asked that the name Meadowvale be painted on the new tower to identify our community.  The photo on the right is an example what the new tower will look like.

Preservation of Oak Tree at Millgrove Park

Residents of Millers Grove are familiar with the lovely old oak trees in the park at Tours and Millers Grove.  This park location is unique due to these large majestic Burr Oak trees that are a true landmark in our community.

I had an onsite meeting with Forestry staff in August to discuss the fate of this old oak tree pictured above. It is located beside the playground at Millers Grove and Tours.

As you can see the tree is totally dead and is starting to rot from the inside.Staff have managed to keep it alive through care and pruning and we had hoped that when it eventually had to come down we could have it carved to remain as an art structure. At this time, we are unsure if  it is viable for carving but I am confident we can retain part of the tree in some form that will compliment the area.

Work will be scheduled to remove all the branches and the trunk down to just below the lowest branch. At that time it will be assessed to see what can be done. If you have seen any trees that have been cut low and have been re-purposed please share with me..I am open to all ideas.  Please email me at [email protected] with your suggestions.
Installation of "Senior Crossing" Signs

I had the pleasure of enjoying a lunch at Eden Seniors Village this summer and had several requests from the residents.

One was for signage indicating that seniors are crossing at Battleford and Winston Churchill, similar to those near Heritage Glen at Glen Erin and Battleford.

I am pleased to confirm that the "Senior Crossing" signs will be installed at the intersection of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Battleford Road.

Development Update:  6719 Glen Erin Drive

I would like to thank the residents who met with me on August 22nd to discuss the possible projects we can ask for under Section 37 of the Planning Act for the development at 6719 Glen Erin. We came up with some great ideas.

I will be getting some designs and costing and I will be doing a mailing to the residents in the area.
Repair Work at Erin Mills Pkwy and 403 Underpass

This is a reminder that the provincial Ministry of Transportation continues on repair work on the underpass of Erin Mills Parkway at the 403.  Construction is planned through to the fall.

During this time Erin Mills will be reduced to 2 lanes in this area and there will be lane closures on the 403 at times as well as ramp closures at night both north and southbound.   Please click here for road closure dates.
