City moving ahead on Vision Zero
As Chair of the City’s Road Safety Committee, I am pleased that Council has supported moving ahead to make our roads safer. The measures include reducing all residential speed limits to 40 kph and 30 in school zones, introducing Automated Speed Enforcement early in 2021 in school zones and Community Safety Zones and continuing with implementing traffic calming where the criteria is met.
In Ward 9, traffic calming is being installed along Montevideo Road in response to speeding concerns that were raised by residents and validated by staff. Public input was obtained in several ways including an Open House that I held and we had a lot of feedback with a majority of residents supporting moving ahead. Speed cushions are now being installed. These have been in place on Edenwood north of Battleford and have proven to be very effective in slowing down traffic in that area. Speed cushions are not speed bumps. They are designed to be virtually unnoticeable if you are traveling at the speed limit but you will notice them if you are speeding…that’s how they work.
On a road with multiple schools, many blind curves, multiple park crossings, etc. speed cushions will provide an additional measure of safety…and that’s a top priority. Vision Zero aims for zero fatalities or injuries on our roads.
I will also be identifying locations in the ward for pedestrian activated signals to make it safer for pedestrians to cross roads mid-block where warranted. Please let me know by email if you have suggestions for locations and I will have our Traffic staff review.
We need to work together to keep everyone safe in our neighbourhoods.
