June 30, 2020
Dear Resident:

It has been a busy month with more services re-opening and more planned. We are doing well in Mississauga but we cannot let down our guard. Please continue to stay 6' apart, wear a mask to further protect you and anyone around you, wash your hands, get tested if you think you may have been exposed.

Council will be dealing with passing a bylaw next Wednesday July 8 to mandate the wearing of a mask or other face covering in indoor public places. We want to move ahead to reopen the economy but unless we have the support and cooperation of everyone, that will not happen. I thank all the people who have been responsible about keeping distance and wearing masks when they cannot. This step to mandate is not taken lightly but it is with the support of our Medical Officer of Health. It appears all regions in the GTA and Hamilton are also going to pass such a bylaw.

As we open more public amenities, we are starting to see people crowding more and this is a dangerous action. It can and likely will lead to more virus spread. We want to stay open but we rely on all residents to help make that happen. Our playgrounds and fitness equipment are NOT open yet by Provincial order. Please keep your children off them for the safety of all. We are seeing higher numbers of cases in the younger age groups and of course they can spread it to their parents and grandparents who may be even more vulnerable.

You will see our splash pads reopening as of today and again please keep children 6' apart.

We are discussing mandatory masks or face coverings required in all public businesses and I expect that decision to be made soon. This is for your safety!! You can use a mask or bandana or scarf, anything that covers mouth and nose.

Please not the updates below for openings as well as the start of parking enforcement, fares on transit, etc.

Stay safe, stay together but apart and stay healthy.

As always you can contact me for assistance on any city or region issue at pat.saito@mississauga,ca, by phone to 905-896-5900 at any time and my staff and I will be pleased to help you.

Temporary Active Transportation Lanes
The City of Mississauga has implemented several temporary active transportation lanes across the city which promote safe active transportation during COVID-19. The lanes make physical distancing safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists looking to exercise in their neighbourhood or make local trips for essentials like groceries and medical appointments.

In Ward 9, the lanes are on Glen Erin Drive from Britannia Road West to Aquitaine Avenue, as well as along Thomas Street between Winston Churchill Boulevard and Erin Mills Parkway. I encourage people to use these lanes for cycling and help reduce the existing congestion on the Lake Aquitaine and Wabukayne Trails.

Cyclists: Ring Your Bell!
I have been receiving many complaints from residents about cyclists not using their bell while passing pedestrians on pathways through parks.

Please be reminded to ring your bell to alert pedestrians of your presence so that they can safely move out of your way.

With this warmer weather, I understand that we all want to get outside, but please be mindful of others and courteous to all.
Fare collection starts on Miway, masks required
Effective July 2, following the strong recommendation of Peel Public Health and the Governments of Ontario and Canada, non-medical masks or face coverings will be mandatory when travelling on MiWay  to help keep customers and operators safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Children under the age of two, people with disabilities or other medical conditions that prevent them from wearing any mask will not be required to wear one.

Fare collection and front door boarding for all customers will also resume on July 2.  MiWay will reopen the City Centre Transit Terminal (CCTT) fares booth on June 24 to provide customers with the opportunity to purchase  PRESTO  fares in advance of the resumption of fare collection. The booth will be open Monday to Friday from 11:15 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice with appropriate physical distancing measures in place.
Bulk collection Resumed at curbside
I am pleased to announce that effective this week, we will be collecting large bulk items at curbside again on your waste collection week.

You can also take your bulk items to the Community Recycling Centres. Our closest one is Battleford east of Erin Mills Parkway. We continue to provide free drop off up to 100 kg of excess waste, once per day, with no fees. Standard fees will apply to anything over the 100 kg limit. Payment can only be made using debit or credit. Cash will not be accepted. No fees will apply to loads of only scrap metal and blue box recyclables.

For the safety of the community and employees, CRCs have implemented measures of physical distancing and have limited the number of vehicles allowed into the CRCs at any one time. As such, residents should be aware that there may be delays.

Residents are also encouraged to visit peelregion.ca/waste/community-recycling-centres for all affected changes, operating hours and applicable standard fee amount.
Dealing with loud, fast vehicles and targeting street racing

One of the most prevenaltn complaints these last few months has been noisy vehicles and speeding.
This in enforced by Peel Police and they have issued tickets and removed keys from many motorists. The noise issue is very hard to enforce. Our Bylaw officers cannot stop vehicles and we are working on a program to pair them with a police officer to crack down on these loud, fast cars and motorcycles. This program cannot start however until it is safe to have our staff in the same vehicle. We are continuing to work on this and Peel Police are out there doing ongoing traffic enforcement.

Peel Regional Police have also implemented a program aimed to stop street racing on our streets. The E.R.A.S.E. Program (Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere) targets poor driver behaviour through education and strategic enforcement.

Residents are reminded to do their part to abide by the rules of the road and keep themselves and others safe. If you observe aggressive driving or speed racing activities, please report those instances to the police by calling 905-453-3311 or c lick here to file a report through Road Watch .

Following the Government of Ontario’s announcement, as of June 12, the limit on social gatherings increased from five to 10 people.

In addition, all places of worship can reopen so long as physical distancing is in place and attendance is limited to 30 per cent of building capacity.

Wear a mask or face covering when physical distancing is a challenge, wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face and stay home if you are feeling ill.
How to Build Your Social Circle
The Core Four Steps to Slow the Spread of COVID-19
While Mississauga is starting to see the rates of new cases stabilize, we need to pull together to prevent a second wave of the COVID-19.

Here are four simple actions you can take to help our City overcome the virus:

1 Stay apart: Maintain 2-metres (6 feet) distance from everyone outside your safe social circle.

2 Lather up: Wash your hands often with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

3 Mask up: Wear a non-medical mask when maintaining physical distancing is difficult. Protect the supply of medical grade masks for health care workers.

4 Get tested: Get tested if you think you might have COVID-19 or have been exposed to it. While waiting for test results, stay home, self-isolate and prevent potential spread.
