We value and depend on citizens to become involved in the city. One of the main ways you can do this is to sit on one of the citizen committees. It is such an honour for me to serve on many of these with dedicated and engaged citizens. We depend on their feedback and input on many issues.

On December 12, Council voted to opt out of allowing cannabis retail stores to open in Mississauga. Our decision was made because the province was not giving municipalities any rights to determine where the stores would be located. This is contrary to the rights given in all other provinces that have private stores. This could have resulted in multiple stores opening alongside sensitive uses such as community centres, youth drop ins and day cares.
A survey done by the City indicated that while a majority of the approximate 500 respondents agreed to allow the stores a huge percentage also wanted the city to have control over locations and they did not support the existing regulations.
I heard from many Ward 9 residents who supported us opting out as well as a smaller number wanting us to opt in. It was a hard decision but unless the province changes the rules, it was the right one. We have sent a request to the premier asking for the rights that every other municipality is also asking for and if the rules change we will revisit the issue in the new year.
Please take this opportunity to have your say on the 2019 budget. I want to hear from you and there are many ways you can get involved. Last year I held a Budget Town Hall which was live streamed on Facebook. This was very successful and this year the City will be doing this citywide.
