Featured Performers:
---->Native Voice (from Denver Public Schools Indian Education Program):
As a group of DPS high school students representing different Native tribes/nations, these youth were brought together from various schools to share their experiences with district administrators and staff at the DPS Equity Boot Camp. They used spoken word to deliver a message about the difficulties they face as Native students in schools as well as what educators can do to improve the situation. The event was so successful that requests soon followed for performances elsewhere.

: Born and raised in Southwest Denver, I have worked as an artist for the last 20 years, showing my work across the country. Over the last 15 years, I have given my time and efforts to Denver Public Schools in just about every teaching situation, from charter and night school to private and alternative. Now, I am working on perusing my passion to work as an Art therapist.

Xpress Yourself Basic Spoken Word Workshops for Youth (#XpressYourself) |
We have worked with numerous schools and organizations throughout Colorado to give underserved youth an opportunity to express themselves. Recent partners: Stein Elementary, McElwain Elementary, Brady Exploration School.
Letters from McElwain Elementary students:
If you are interested
in having Cafe Cultura present at your school or organization, feel free to contact us. Our
basic version
is a
one time, 1 to 2 hour
session
. We have used this
highly engaging
and
culturally relevant
workshop structure for over eight years to encourage Chicana/o and Native youth to use spoken word to give voice to our stories of love, struggle, injustice, and celebration. They serve to
supplement and support Language Arts/English curriculum
. Workshop structure was designed by a spoken word artist with 4 years experience teaching at the middle and high school level with contributions from other poets and youth advocates.Click here for a detailed information sheet.
