Greetings from C. Darby Ulery, founder of "Let's Go! Fairhope" events-related newsletter, calendar and website resource for Fairhope, Alabama.
This issue of Let's Go Fairhope is dedicated to the memory of Thelma J. Todd. She will be deeply missed by many in this community including yours truly. Thelma was featured in a 2022 issue with a shorter version of this full length story.
Thelma embodied many wonderful things in our community including being instrumental in helping to document history stories, being active in her church, and the Hope Community. She was the great-great granddaughter of Nancy Lewis, a freed slave who was living on Fairhope land before it was known as Fairhope.
In her interview with Let's Go! Fairhope, Thelma shared stories about growing up African-American in Fairhope, including where she could and could not go due to the color of her skin. She went on to achieve degrees at Rutgers and Columbia, worked at the Library of Congress, and returned to Fairhope after her retirement.
You can read the conversation, including Thelma's thoughts about Fairhope today here. Paul M. Gaston's chapter on Nancy Lewis from Women of Fairhope (1984) is included at the bottom of the story in honor of Thelma's family legacy.

Churches in Baldwin County needed as overnight warming shelters:
Please contact Sea Glass Initiative Inc. if your organization can help:
From Sea Glass Initiative via Facebook:
"Do we have any churches in Baldwin County willing to open as overnight warming shelters Monday and Tuesday? We would need volunteers to help staff it as well as meal donations. We are in great need as there are NO warming shelters in the county. We have many individuals, a lot that are elderly, sleeping outside and in their cars. The temperatures are to be extremely cold. PLEASE consider helping our unhoused community. If you are willing to open please contact us at 251-332-3442."

An unexpected email this past week from the Let's Go! Fairhope web-guy in Florida had a message that simply said "WOW! FAIRHOPE!" It lead me to check the Live at Five page, and sure enough, Live at Five has officially released their entire concert lineup for Spring 2025:
| My music-festival-loving sister in Mississippi is planning to travel to attend at least one of the shows, and I've heard from others that it might be the biggest season yet. Congratulations to Live at Five for a great concert series ahead. View passes and info via the graphic above or here. | |

If you missed last week's WABF interview with Fairhope Police Chief Stephanie Hollinghead, you can play it here. Lori DuBose and Chief Hollinghead cover "what really happened" in an unusual stretch of incidents including the New Year's Eve bomb threat, the search for a possible pier-diver, the McDonald's shooting and body found the next morning, financial scams that have affected local residents, and more.

Reminder: The City of Fairhope, the Fairhope Public Library, Coastal Alabama Community College, and other pubic offices will be closed Monday, January 20, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

In light of the forecast this week, it's a good time to remind everyone that Let's Go! Fairhope is just a guide. Please remember to check with each venue to find out if anything has changed, and always be smarter than the weather. Regardless of calendars and scheduled events, icy roads and freezing temps mean "Let's Go, Cautiously, if at all... !" Stay safe.
