Workforce housing:
From Ben Frost, PB chair: The Warner Planning Board has now received a site plan application by Comet, LLC for a 24-unit rental workforce housing development on Route 103 adjacent to Dunkin Donuts and opposite North Road. The Board will consider the application at its meeting next Monday, August 29; the meeting will start at 7pm and will be on Zoom (details will be included in the meeting agenda, which will be published later this week). The Board will review the application for completeness and if the Board determines that the application is sufficiently complete it will accept the application and hold a public hearing. If the Board accepts the application, potential actions by the Board next week are: approve, approve with conditions, deny, or continue to a subsequent meeting; the last option may be used if there is insufficient information for the Board to make a decision. Documents associated with the application will be posted to the Town's website: Landuse Cases page.

If you have a pool, you can help look for Asian longhorned beetle. UNH is asking NH residents with pools to check their filters regularly for Asian longhorned beetle (ALB). This invasive insect is a serious threat to our forests and trees. ALB isn't in New Hampshire yet. Karen Bennett, Extension Forestry Specialist with UNH Cooperative Extension, said, “We need many people looking for it so we can take steps to limit its spread, if it arrives.” Details here (Thanks Wanda Anderson)

Warner Connects NH Food Pantry and Community Resource Center News
A big shout-out of thanks to the over 500 attendees, 30 sponsors, and Nick's Other Band who made our 1st Annual Riverside Jam event a success on Aug. 20. Mother Nature delivered a beautiful evening and folks enjoyed a gathering of community, fun, food, and music. All donations were gratefully received!
Food insecurity is on the rise - WCNH Food Pantry reports that, monthly, over 400 households and individuals are being helped to meet their basic nutritional needs. Needless to say, all food and monetary donations are very, very appreciated!!! Call 603-456-2053 if you can help.
School Supplies are still available for pick-up during Pantry hours (11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Mon. - Thurs.) or by appointment (call 603-456-2053).
Facebook scams and hackers: If you see a new Friend request from an existing FB Friend OR a message asking you to respond briefly to "help" add you back, and/or to copy and paste the message... do NOT respond or copy and paste. The friend has been hacked and the hacker is collecting FB names to prey on. Also do NOT respond to cute "Do you remember?", or "what is your favorite color or first pet/ school/town/ friend" - they are collecting your approximate age and security answers you might use. DON'T respond even if you never use the info for secure access - it just encourages others to share. Or answer NOYB!! How about "You Could WIN!..just click or respond...". Never going to happen - they are collecting names of who may be fooled by other scams.
Internet discounts: If your income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty guideline you may be able to get $30 off TDS Internet costs - complete an application at affordableconnectivity.gov and within 2 days get a response- if you are eligible they will send a code to submit by phone to a TDS Consumer Specialist. (Alert: long hold times but hang in there!). While talking to the Specialist, ask about other possible discounts, and you may be able to reduce other TDS costs.

Bushwhackin' At the Library
by Roger Robbins
Readers tend to stay in their own lanes, reading books or authors they most enjoy. But, sometimes, it is good to veer off, to crash through the tall weeds, to spelunk a new cave. That is how I discovered Virginia Woolf and her book To the Lighthouse.
To the Lighthouse is different, but rewarding to read. The story takes place on 2 days 10 years apart (straddling World War I), in a summer home in the Hebrides across a bay from a lighthouse. Through the use of stream of consciousness, Virginia Woolf invites you into the story.
You, the reader, hear the thoughts of all dinner guests, back-and-forth-and-forth-and back. Stay with it; absorb the sense of the conversations. Soon you will be saying "I agree with him" or "what she thinks makes perfect sense!" You engage, not as a reader but as a guest, with a plate and a place at the table.
The story of the two days are separated by a section entitled "Time Passes" of 28 pages. It is a powerful, evocative segue, a bridge that tells a story through the declining condition of the family house. Yes, you are glad to see the Ramsays come back, to bring new life to the house, but you suspect things have changed, and not for the better.
