Teen Book Review by Guest Reader Olivia H.

The Door of No Return is a jaw-dropping story about Kofi, a boy who lives in Upper Kwanta, Uganda. Kofi has lived under the shadow of his older brother until he has the chance to prove himself. When things take a turn for the worst Kofi must be braver than ever and overcome the challenges ahead. This fictionalized true story is written in poems and shares the lives of a 19th century African village and family in striking detail.

Are you a teen interested in reading and reviewing Isinglass or Flume nominated books for this column? If so, please stop by the library to ask Casey about this opportunity!

Ticks have hatched a new generation! This is a photo of one that was found attached recently (the dot). Even the "nymph" stage can spread disease, but they are hard to see! Check yourself and your children often and carefully! Be Tick Safe: https://tickfreenh.org/tick-safe-elearning-course/

Warner Fire Rescue's Captain Paul Raymond and EMT Katy Toomey joined the NH State Fire Marshal's Office on a visit to the Boys & Girls Club summer camp in Warner recently. Outdoors, Fitness and Environment

Fun facts about Tomato Hornworms: these monstrous looking and annoying tomato pests transform into the stunning Five-spotted hawkmoth. This moth's long proboscis is perfectly designed to sip nectar from deep within flowers. As it feeds, it unintentionally collects pollen, which it then spreads from flower to flower, aiding in plant reproduction. This process is especially vital for pollinating night-blooming flowers.

Consider supporting them by relocating them to wild meadows instead of killing them, to support a future generation of beautiful and beneficial pollinators, which are facing challenges and need all the help they can get!

The easiest way to spot them: buy a UV flashlight and go out after dusk: they GLOW!

You may find some of them looking mushy and covered in parasitic wasp eggs or larvae: don't destroy those, as they are a natural control.

Outdoor pickleball at Riverside tennis court has a time for beginners or less confident players on Sundays after 11 am. All players: Wednesdays and Sundays at 9am, Weds. and Fridays at 5:30 pm and 2nd and 4th Mondays at 5:30pm. Use the free Team Reach app to see attendance: WarnerNHPB (code WPB21.)

Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair

Reduce your taxes: Recycle! Warner Fees for solid waste disposal in 2023 (not including demolition waste and special disposal items) were $76,091 ($85/ton)!

Paper, corrugated cardboard and metals create income, so please don't put these, or glass or recyclable plastics in the compactor, which costs Warner $$ per ton and fills the landfill with unnecessary waste ash.

Want to get learn more about and get involved in NH environmental issues? Check out NH Network. Various sections hold zoom meetings and events on climate, energy, plastic reduction, etc. https://www.newhampshirenetwork.org/

Stretchy plastics may be dropped off in the TREX box on the porch of the Parish House next to the United Church of Warner for the Simonds School TREX bench project.

Acceptable items stretch when you pull. If it tears like paper, or is shiny or makes a crinkly/crunchy sound, do NOT recycle in the bins. https://nextrex.com/view/educate

Help your neighbors with Capital Region Habitat for Humanity projects in Warner: https://www.habitatconcordnh.org/volunteer for sign up and online waiver form. Daily schedule is 8 am – 4 pm but any day or portion of a day you can help is welcomed.
