Top Cops For Mystery Lovers
by Roger Robbins
Break out of the winter doldrums and find a new sleuth to liven up your mystery life!
Try these proven winners:
Follow the exploits of clergyman Canon Sidney Chambers and his friend Detective Geordie Keating in Grantchester, England, in the years after World War II. Hint: Start with The Road to Grantchester, read the others in order. Pillsbury Free Library has the Grantchester television series on DVD. A must watch!
Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse is English sleuthing at its best. Read the books, or watch young Morse in the television series Endeavour.
Inspector Endeavour Morse's assistant, Sergeant Detective Robbie Lewis, has his own detective series, Inspector Lewis.
Louise Penny's Gamache series is red-hot popular. The Inspector Gamache stories are lively and well-populated with memorable characters. Louise Penny's series is also available from Overdrive in ebook and audiobook formats. Just use your library card number and your password (contact the library if you need this information) and you can download from Overdrive in seconds.
Happy sleuthing!

Tech Tips: Zoom Subtitles!
|
All accounts in Zoom now have the ability to add "transcriptions" or subtitles / captions. This can be a great help for anyone who has a hard time hearing on Zoom meetings. Even family Zoom groups may include people who this would help.
Captioning needs to be turned on before the meeting starts, and can only be done while signed in at Zoom.us.
There are three host options: type them manually (can be assigned to any co-host), use voice-activated auto-transcription (in paid accounts only), or contract with a third party through API tech magic. The auto-transcription does really well when people speak clearly, although it stumbles with unknown places or names.
Once the transcriptions/subtitles are turned on by the host, there is an "opt-out" for attendees who do not want to see them on the screen: select "hide subtitle".
|
|
An added bonus is the option for any person to see the "full transcript" in a text box, and it can be saved. Great for keeping notes, or if you missed a few words because the doorbell rang.
The full transcript can be viewed at any point during the meeting and contains all of the text that was generated up to the moment. Keep in mind, it isn't perfect.
Play around with it, and have fun! It may soon be in use at Town meetings and programs!
Need instructions on this, or a basic Zoom lesson? Call us at 456-2289.
