A Not So Calm Address:

Wesley's Address to the Colonists

TO AMERICAN METHODISTS AT AMERICA'S 250TH

One of the most controversial political writings in Methodist history was the “A Calm Address to Our American Colonies” written by John Wesley. On the eve of the American Revolution, Wesley told a restless people: you need to calm down.

In our own time, the same demand echoes everywhere harm is challenged: be reasonable, lower your voice, wait your turn, do not make people uncomfortable.

This treatise uses Wesley’s warnings against false liberty, propaganda, rupture, and moral decay… and redirected them against their rightful target for our day.

Read the not-so-calm address about what Wesley’s warnings mean for United Methodists today.
