Parental Involvement Opportunties

Personal Devices at School

Many families send their child to school with a personal device of some kind (cell phone, iPod, high-tech watch). Often, parents do this as a safety measure so students can call/text as they travel between school and home. However, the growing number and types of these devices pose a significant distraction during school hours. Moving forward, all devices (including watches) that have the ability to text/call will be kept in backpacks from 7:45 to 3:15. Students are not to use these devices until they leave the elementary building.

In cooperation with our PTO Chapter, Wahoo Elementary will continue our local WATCH D.O.G.S. program this year! WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is a family and community engagement educational initiative. The program aims to provide positive male role models for students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important, and to provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security. How To Handle Pushback With Homework

With the school year now underway more than likely your child will have homework. Some children are excited and rush home to complete their work. Other children may be more hesitant or even push back against completing the work. This creates a challenging and stressful situation for the whole family. Below are a couple ideas to help handle the situation.

Avoid dismissing their feelings. Instead, try to acknowledge them and let your child know you can talk about them more later. By letting your child know that you care about what they’re saying, you can avoid getting into a debate in the moment.
Hear them out. Once work time is over, ask your child to explain what they’re upset about, and do your best to listen carefully to their answers. They may have valuable ideas about how to make the school day work better!

Focus on the positive. Even if your child is complaining, you can still focus your attention on what they’re doing well. Pointing out their engaged efforts and how much you appreciate them can help your child refocus on the work at hand.
