2021 Bid For Cause: Part 1, Fire Safety
|
By Kristen Lihos, Advancement Director
In 1997 I set off the GCS high school fire alarm. Well, I think I did, anyway. My 10th-grade classmate, Peter (also a GCS parent now, consequently), and I were walking to class through the crowded halls when, just as we passed the fire alarm pull station, the alarm went off, and we all exited the building. Later that day Peter and I found ourselves in the principal’s office explaining that it was possible we had brushed the alarm with our shoulders or backpacks as we were passing but definitely not intentional. Twenty-four years later I find myself wondering how it is possible that my own children now pass the very same fire-pull station!

After School Art
Grades 1-3: April 8 & 15
Fee: $20
Super Ice Cream Cone Sculpture:
Students will use paper-mache to create a fun ice cream cone. Students will enjoy making their own uniquely scrumptious-looking "scoops" with the painting on Week 2.
Grades 4-8: April 22 & 29
Fee: $20
Paper Quilling
Students will learn the technique of paper quilling to create cards and pictures. Students will see why this ancient form of art has made a big comeback.
If you would like your students to participate in after school art, please call the office (540-886-0937) or email Mrs. Wells (mwells@gcswarriors.org) to sign up. The fee will be added to your account, so you do not need to send money to the office.
** Please register by Friday, April 2nd **

Students and faculty enjoyed the time away from the academic routine by playing volleyball (with some interesting rules), 4-way kickball (best described as "organized chaos"), and dodge-ball (Mr. Allamon was the MVP).
Also filling out the afternoon was a thought-provoking session led by Mrs. Terri Kerr on Healthy Relationships & Thinking, and then the annual Senior Appreciation Day Roast. The highlight of the latter was when the audience thought they knew who was being described in one particular roast, only to find out it was in actuality describing Richard Jones!
Thanks go to the various faculty readers/chaperones as well as to Tammy Persinger, Leslie Artley, and Jason Ralston for all of their behind-the-scenes assistance.

Though almost a full month away, please be informed that this year we are tweaking the normal bell schedules for this week of standardized testing in order to minimize the impact upon classroom instruction.
The major difference will be that 11th & 12th graders, who do not take these tests, will not need to arrive at school until 9:00 AM on Monday-Thursday (April 26-29). On Friday, April 30th, we will follow a normal bell schedule, so juniors & seniors will need to arrive by 8:05 AM that day.
During each school day of this week, freshmen and sophomores should arrive at the normal time, as each day's testing begins at 8:05 AM.

High School Advanced Art class taught by Jill Bywaters:
These light sculpture projects take their inspiration from Chinese paper lanterns. Students used reed, white tissue paper, and glue to create organic forms abstracted from an object in nature.
