2021-22 GCS Yearbook

Receives Honorable Mention

Blog by Head of School, Donald M. Larson, PhD

I remember being on yearbook staff when I was in high school many years ago, gathering pictures, quotes, and completing the layouts. It is a lot of work that is behind the scenes and often not appreciated or acknowledged. For years, GCS has published a quality yearbook that has required much time and effort. When I saw the last year’s yearbook that we received a couple of weeks ago, I couldn’t help but notice a huge upgrade from what we have had in the past. I was not the only one who took notice. The yearbook publisher entered the GCS yearbook in the 2022 National Yearbook Context, and the yearbook won an Honorable Mention.  .....  Continue reading here.

YEARBOOK needs photos of your family enjoying THE GREAT OUTDOORS

What a glorious time of year to live in the Shenandoah Valley! We know you all are out there apple-picking, pumpkin-patching, hiking, and enjoying all that creation has to offer, and we need your pictures! We are doing a yearbook story on how GCS families enjoy our beautiful natural area, and we can't think of a better month to capture photos. Please send your pictures (along with captions) to [email protected]!

Winter Coat Donations

It's that time of year when we think about replacing coats that the kids have outgrown or we no longer use. As your family goes through the closets, please consider bringing those extra coats in to either school. We will be collecting gently-used or new coats of all sizes to bless the families at Wenonah Elementary School who are not prepared for colder weather. Information will be coming very soon about the Wenonah Christmas Project.

It's Getting Cold!

Please be sure to send your students with winter coats, hats, and gloves for recess. It has gotten pretty chilly at recess.

4th-6th Grade Grandparents' Day!!

Grandparents’ Day invitations and instructions came home in white envelopes this week. The students have been working very hard for this wonderful event. Please try to confirm at least one special guest for your 4th-6th grade student. Please remember that parents are asked to attend the Thursday evening performance (October 20th at 6:30 PM) so that the Friday morning performance is reserved for your student’s invited guests.

Grandparents’ Day Events

October 20 - 6:30 PM performance for parents

October 21 - 10:00 AM performance for grandparents and special guests

 October 27: ES/MS Class-Photo Day

Don't forget to send in your class picture ordering envelope or order online.  Students may get a retake, but only if their original pictures are returned.

Shoes for Kenya

For the last thirteen years, our school has been collecting used shoes to support the Well of Hope in Kenya. The goal of this organization is to help the widows of Kenya and their children. The Well of Hope organization has a vision of providing each homeless woman and her children a place of their own. In Kenya there is a market for lightly-worn American shoes. By giving each woman shoes to sell, she can learn to run a business and earn money to purchase a small plot of land and put money towards a house. This also provides the widow and her children safety and protection.

If your family has shoes you'd like to donate, please have your kids bring them in to the office. Shoes of any size and style are acceptable!

Great Escape II

Please pray for our speaker, Pastor Shawn McBride, and all involved with this event. We strongly desire to have fun, fellowship, and protection but even more so want our hearts and minds to be impacted by His Word during our sessions.

Please arrange for your student(s) to be dropped off (7:30-8:00 AM) and picked up (3:20-3:45 PM) at Victory Worship Center (200 Hammond Lane, Staunton).

Lunch, snacks, and beverages will be provided.

D.C. Trip

High school students along with faculty chaperones will be touring various venues in our nation's capital on Monday, November 7th.

We will begin boarding buses at the parking lot near the Gypsy Hill Gym at Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton at 6:30 AM and will return to the same location by 6:30 PM.

Cellphones will be collected as students ride to D.C., but these will be returned to students as they disembark. Limited texting, calling, and appropriate photo-taking are permissible; however, students should primarily interact with one another and focus on taking in the sights and interacting with the exhibits at museums, memorials, landmarks, etc.

Students will be broken into small groups; however, groups will always be accompanied by a chaperone.

Warm, layered, "casual dress code" attire is permitted, and comfortable walking shoes are encouraged.

It is recommended that students bring $20 to pay for lunch at restaurants at various venues, as food cannot be brought into the venues. Prices are "inflated" at these restaurants, so please be aware that this amount may not be sufficient for some. Bringing additional money for souvenirs is optional.

Grade-level itineraries and additional details will be sent out to families next week.
