Washington State Winemaker Stories for the Wine Media

This is the first in a multi-part special edition regional newsletter featuring 8 winemakers from Washington State.

World-Class Wine from the Second Largest Region in the U.S.

With over 1,000 wineries and 50,000 acres of wine grapes, Washington State is the second largest wine-producing state in the U.S. Washington produces 80+ varieties from 21 AVAs, contributing a total in-state economic impact of more than $10.56B. Most Washington wineries are small, family-owned businesses – 90 percent produce fewer than 5,000 cases a year!

Washington has some of the most dramatic daily temperature fluctuations of any wine region in the world. Temperatures cool down rapidly after warm summer days. This leads to ripe fruit flavors and helps preserve natural acidity, creating ideal conditions for winegrowing.

After studying biochemistry and earning a degree in Enology at Cal State Fresno, he honed his craft across Burgundy, Tuscany, and Switzerland.

Back in Washington, Alex spent 17 years at Quilceda Creek, rising from harvest intern to winemaker, before leading Matthews, Tenor, and Single Barrel in 2021.

Before pursuing a personal passion for winemaking, he spent three decades working in biomedical research, developing cancer therapeutics, and in the high-tech industry, focusing on business and product innovation. He still holds a full-time leadership role in the tech industry and the duality of being grounded in two very different worlds enriches both sides of what he does.
