Hello Theatre Lovers,
Last week we held our annual celebration of International Women’s Day with the Girls Nite Out comedy troupe at the Collingwood Legion. The comedians were hilarious, with Elvira Kurt leading the charge! This year we had the pleasure of featuring other amazing women with: singer/songwriter Jess Bowman, hoola hooper Martina Spiers, burlesque dancer Kat Salvador, Selena Blais and her Georgian Life Photo Booth, charcuterie boxes by Holly Haire, and our amazing female sponsors Ashley Lougheed from GIRL TIME INC, Heather Stitt from RE/MAX FOUR SEASONS, Anita Hearn from HEARN BEAUMONT GROUP-ROYAL LEPAGE LOCATIONS NORTH, Michelle Kingsbury from CHESTNUT PARK REAL ESTATE LTD and Kimberly Vincent from KIMBERLY VINCENT PHOTOGRAPHY. What a group of outstanding women! Thank you to all of them, and to everyone who attended this SOLD OUT event including our wonderful audience members, volunteers and staff. BRAVO LADIES! I also want to thank the brave men who attended including our 50/50 ticket sellers Jim Roe, John Tindale, Blaine Angus and Harold Bickerstaff, plus our DJ Sam Fleming and our sound and lighting pro Roger Robinson. UP NEXT – MR. DEAN HOLLIN
|
|
If you don’t know Dean Hollin let me tell you something, there is pretty much nothing this man cannot do! He is an actor, singer, director, radio host (for ZOOMER and Classical FM) and, right now as I write this letter, he is running our March Break Drama Camp in which the kids are performing in their own intergalactic mini-musical, written and directed by Dean Hollin!
Many of you will know Dean for his love and incredible knowledge of the music from the Great American Songbook. Wikipedia says “The Great American Songbook is the loosely defined canon of significant early-20th-century American jazz standards, popular songs, and show tunes”, and Dean knows them all! About 20 years ago Dean wrote and starred in a play about Cole Porter called COLE HEARTED. He has not done it for 20 years and told me it was probably his favourite of his. So we decided it was time for him to do it again, and Dean’s beautiful show will open our Theatre Collingwood 2023 Theatre Season April 11th-15th at the Simcoe Street Theatre. Special thanks to Duntroon Highlands for coming on board as our Production Sponsor for COLE HEARTED.
Cole Porter and his beautiful music, is someone and something that I believe is for all ages and perhaps is something missing and needed nowadays. Cole wrote both the music and the lyrics, and his songs spoke of undeniable love. Please take a moment and watch this beautiful video of two of my favourites, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, as they sing and speak of the music of Cole Porter. THEN PLEASE GET ON THE COMPUTER OR PHONE AND ORDER YOUR TICKETS TO “COLE HEARTED”.

AND NOW LADYS, ITS TIME FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT!
|
|
I met Kat Salvador during the pandemic when several of us in the arts community decided to work together to form the SGB Arts Network. Kat is an incredibly talented dancer and burlesque artists. I was intrigued by the idea of offering a burlesque course for women of all ages (but especially seniors) which would require no previous skill level and would allow women to just have fun and learn some new movements, in a non-threatening environment. Together we have put together a 6-class program that will run from April 27th-June 1st at The Simcoe Street Theatre. The course is $120 (plus HST) and guarantees fun! This course is a movement class for all women. If you are able bodied or if you need to work from a chair, walker or wheelchair, that is just fine and this class is for you.
As Kat says on her website:
“There is no previous dance training required to learn the art of burlesque. There is no body flexibility or agility required. There is no age barrier, size barrier or technical barrier. And most importantly, there is no judgement. There is only the desire to enjoy yourself….I struggled for a long time with self-esteem issues. This is why I originally started burlesque performing and also why I have a unique advantage to teaching this particular type of movement. My classes are purposefully based on fun which helps to provide a comfortable atmosphere for all participants. The goal is to give every person a positive experience and have them leave feeling uplifted and empowered!”
To sign up and be a part of this exciting, fun, new Theatre Collingwood class please call 705-445-2200.

We are so excited to be offering 4/5 of our regular season shows at the Simcoe Street Theatre this year in downtown Collingwood, and one other show just outside of the downtown. This means you can enjoy the downtown shops and restaurants and then stroll over to the theatre. We have worked really hard to program an exciting lineup for you. Now we need YOU to bring your friends and come see the shows! We all know the pandemic was very hard on everyone and theatre companies really suffered. We look so forward to seeing you all back at our shows this year. Community coming together again! Please tell your friends and purchase your tickets for our 39th year of being Collingwood’s professional theatre company, and let’s come together for some great storytelling! Our performers are pros and often also performing at Shaw, Stratford and Broadway, as well as on other wonderful Canadian stages. Remember we work hard to keep our tickets affordable and also offer special prices for STUDENTS and ARTS WORKERS. You can purchase your season’s pass or regular tickets at 705-445-2200 or by visiting our website at www.theatrecollingwood.ca.
