Reading an article about the historic wildfires burning in France and Spain this last week of July, I thought this excerpt from an interview with a Bordeaux vintner perfectly summed up the state of the global wine (and grape) industry: “For the wine industry, it’s one thing on top of the other,” he said. There’s been drought, heatwaves, tariffs, labor challenges and historically low consumption. “It doesn’t make our lives very easy.”

Anyone growing grapes anywhere in the world would agree. As this French winemaker plans how to evacuate the horses, goats, chickens and llamas from his 1365 chateau, he sees an industry that’s sustained families for hundreds of years literally going up in flames. The fires serve as an analogy for the confluence of events shaking our industry to its economic core.


But some forward-thinking scientists are working to find new ways to help sustain grape-growing and winemaking with things that would otherwise be taken out with the trash.

 

Believing that wine, table grapes, raisins, and juice and jelly are not the only valuable outputs of a vineyard, these recent valorization efforts focus on grabbing grapes a greater share of the emerging bioeconomy. The byproducts of grape production—the seeds, stems, pruned canes, pomace and more—may be rich sources of revenue, all on their own. For example:

 

  • Food scientists at Cornell have found that the grape skins, seeds and stems left over after pressing can be a healthy replacement for the antibiotics routinely added to chicken feed. Just a half-percent of grape pomace in feed can nearly match traditional antibiotics’ performance, improving weight gain, feed efficiency and gut health in broiler chickens.
  • Researchers at New Zealand’s Lincoln University are getting promising results testing grape pomace and pruning waste as sources of biochar and compost for vineyard soils.
  • UC Davis scientists are using genomic selection to develop tomato and grape varieties whose altered pectin or sugar profiles could increase the volume and purity of high-value nutraceutical extracts in their pomace.
  • A new housing project in Brooklyn features pathways and playgrounds paved with ground corks from New York City restaurants’ waste wine bottles.


Some of my favorite grape research projects come from creative thinkers who turn a problem on its head. To me, these valorization efforts fall in that category. By addressing the industry’s consumption and economics issues from a different angle, these innovators offer something that’s in short supply for most grape growers: if not a potential new source of income, then hope that there are people working to solve their most pressing challenges. Both may come from unexpected places.

This month, I attended the final event in the Organic Field Day Series put on by Napa Valley Grapegrowers, an NGRA member-organization. It featured the impressive cover crop trial at the Opus One Oakville South vineyard. There, I learned that some native grasses can root as deep as 8 feet and live more than 100 years! But walking back to my car, it was these old vines that stole the show. They’re See Clone Cabernet Sauvignon—one of only three official California Heritage Clones—planted on 5c rootstock. At 35 years old, their stout trunks, vigorous growth and vibrant canopy radiate an undeniable vitality. As Baron Philippe de Rothschild is quoted on the Opus One website, "Making a great wine is easy, it’s just the first 100 years that are difficult.” Clearly, these vines are well on their way.

At NGRA’s Mid-year Board Meeting in Boise, ID, last month, we took stock of our progress so far this year and made sure we’re on track to make meaningful progress in the remaining months of 2026. Among the places we’ve made real strides has been membership development.

U.S. Supreme Court Rules for Roundup

In late June, the Supreme Court ruled 7–2 for Bayer/Monsanto, blocking lawsuits related to cancer (specifically non-Hodgkin lymphoma) stemming from the use of Roundup and the company’s liability (or lack thereof) for failing to warn consumers of the risks. “The EPA finds there is no risk to human health when glyphosate is applied following label instructions, says Exposure Consulting Toxicologist Alex LeBeau,” Wine Enthusiast reports. “Simply stated: the dose determines the health risk.’ Yet, glyphosate was found in 19 of 20 wines and beers widely available in grocery stores, and 81% of Americans tested show recent exposure to the chemical. Bayer has paid $10+ billion in settlements in more than 100,000 lawsuits prompted by potential links between glyphosate and cancer. The ruling will save the company billions.

Proposed Rule for Federal Funding Receives Stiff Pushback

When the comment period ended on July 13, 2026, nearly 500,000 comments had been received on the “Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance,” filed by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget on May 29, 2026. They came from academics, artists, city leaders, law enforcement officials, scientists, state attorneys general, congressional lawmakers and members of the general public, urging the Trump administration to reconsider its plan to assert more control over federal grants. One letter came from NGRA. Many of the submissions, including ours, expressed misgivings with the draft White House plan to subject federal spending to political review. The effective date of the final rule was stated as Oct. 1, 2026.

WineAmerica Enters Its Next Chapter

After more than four decades of dedicated service to the American wine industry, Jim Trezise this month stepped down as President of WineAmerica. His leadership and advocacy helped shape WineAmerica into the national voice for wineries for public policy and regulatory affairs across the country. Going forward, WineAmerica’s Executive Director Michael Kaiser will lead the organization’s strategic priorities and day-to-day operations.

 

Jim became President of WineAmerica in 2017, and has been a member of NGRA’s Board of Directors ever since. In addition, he’s led other vital wine associations, including New York State Wine Grape Growers, New York Wine Council, New York Wine & Grape Foundation and International Riesling Foundation, over the course of his 44-year career. We echo the words of Dana Huber, WineAmerica Board Chair and Vice President of Distribution & Public Relations at Huber Winery & Starlight Distillery: “Jim’s impact on WineAmerica and the American wine industry cannot be overstated. We are grateful for his decades of service and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.”

Larry Bettiga Retires

Larry Bettiga, the well-loved and influential University of California Cooperative Extension viticulture advisor for Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties, retired from UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) on July 1, 2026, after 41 years. 


Larry was the driving force behind the third edition of the Grape Pest Management guide—a dog-eared copy of which resides in the truck of most grape growers in California and beyond. Published in 2013 by UC ANR, the book not only distills Larry’s extensive knowledge but includes the expertise of more than 60 experts. The contributions of so many leading lights across academia and industry are a testament to Larry’s standing in the field. But to him, it represents an aspect of extension he has always cherished: the teamwork.


“I think what I’m most proud of is I’ve had the ability to work with a lot of people over the course of my career,” he says. “And some of the most satisfying projects have been where I developed a team to address a problem.” Aiming to continue his life’s work, Bettiga has applied for emeritus status with UC ANR. Decadal Survey for Earth Observations from Space

At the request of NASA Earth Science Division, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is initiating the Decadal Survey for Earth Science and Applications from Space 2028–2037. Building on the 2018 decadal survey, the survey aims to identify and address the highest priority Earth science and applications challenges to advance through space-based observations in the coming decade—including in agriculture. A request for information invites input on a broad range of topics, including science and applications priorities, observational needs, implementation approaches and related contextual issues. GWSS-Infested Plants Generate Crisis Response in California

By the Pierce’s Disease Control Program

In California, two recent nursery shipment incidents involving glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) set off alarm bells for grape growers across the state. GWSS is the main insect that spreads Pierce’s disease (PD), which is fatal to grapevines. Led by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), state and county officials, University of California Cooperative Extension offices and winegrape associations moved quickly to find affected plants, reduce the risk of spread and keep industry partners informed. 


The Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter (GWSS) program in California is run through the CDFA Pierce’s Disease Control Program to stop the spread of the invasive GWSS insect and Pierce’s disease. The state coordinates with local county offices on pest tracking, nursery rules and biological controls. The incidents show the importance of early detection, rapid response and strong partnerships.


What Happened, Where

The first incident involved about 10,000 GWSS-infested grapevines shipped from a Fresno County, CA, nursery to Costco stores in 24 counties between April 21 and May 21, 2026. Since some customers purchased grapevines outside the county where they live, officials expanded the response into 16 neighboring counties where affected plants may have been taken, widening the search to 40 counties in all. Officials in affected counties are working to contact about 7,000 customers to locate and inspect the vines and nearby areas, safely dispose of potentially infested vines and place traps for sharpshooters that may emerge. State and county officials also have strengthened oversight at the source nursery. 


Late last month, CDFA responded to a separate nursery shipment incident involving desert willow plants from outside the state. GWSS egg masses were found on some of the plants, which were shipped from Texas to 68 Costco stores in 21 California counties. Some plants were stopped before they arrived at Costco, and others were destroyed at Costco before they were sold. A total of 376 desert willows were sold in 52 stores in 18 counties between June 24 and July 3, 2026. 


“This response shows why early detection and rapid action are so important,” said Michelle Pham of the Pierce’s Disease Control Program. “State officials, county agricultural commissioners, retailers and industry partners are working together to locate affected plants, expand monitoring and help protect California vineyards.”


Inspection Findings Are Encouraging 

For the grapevine response, most detections have been egg masses and nymphs. As of early July, only a small number of adult GWSS had been found statewide. Officials have found no evidence so far of new GWSS infestations establishing in the environment.


For the desert willow response, only GWSS egg masses had been found as of early July. One egg mass of a broad-headed sharpshooter was found at one store. This insect can also spread PD but is not known to occur in California.


Response Efforts Continue 

Officials in the affected California counties are still locating and inspecting plants, and traps remain in place near stores and customer locations. Monitoring will continue through at least Sept. 30, the end of the regular trapping season, to detect any GWSS that may have moved beyond the affected plants. Continued monitoring will be important over time because it can take multiple seasons to determine whether GWSS has become established in a new area. 


Whether you’ve recently purchased vines (or willows) or not, if you grow grapes in California, make sure you know what GWSS looks like in all its life stages—you could see both young adults and egg masses this time of year. And be on the lookout for PD symptoms, too. If you suspect you’ve found GWSS or PD symptoms, contact your local agricultural commissioner’s office. Reporting supports rapid response efforts and helps protect vineyards throughout California. Funding Opportunities

Specialty Crop Multi-State Program

This federal grant program is offered by the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service and administered by State Departments of Agriculture. It aims to fund collaborative, multi-state projects that address regional or national level specialty crop issues, including food safety, plant pests and disease, research, crop-specific projects addressing common issues, and marketing and promotion. Proposals must include at least two partners located in two different states. Approximately $14.3 million is available; awards will range from $250,000 to $1 million. Cost share contributions of 25% are required. Proposals are due by Aug. 31, 2026.


Plant Protection Act (PPA) Section 7721

USDAs Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is now accepting submissions for funding through two programs authorized under PPA 7721:

 

  • The Plant Pest and Disease Management and Disaster Prevention Program (PPDMDPP) supports projects that safeguard plant health by expanding surveillance, improving detection and helping communities respond quickly to emerging plant pest threats. PPDMDPP FY27 funding is set at $80 million. Project suggestions are due by Sept. 21, 2026.
  • USDA also will invest $10 million to support the National Clean Plant Network (NCPN), which provides growers with healthy, disease-free propagation material for high-value specialty crops such as berries, grapes, citrus, fruit trees, hops, sweet potatoes and roses. NCPN project submissions are due by Oct. 19, 2026.

Europe Wildfires: Officials Warn That Wildfires Could Still Be Burning in November—As It Happened

EU officials have said wildfires could still be burning until early November in what threatens to be a record-breaking year in terms of area of land burned. So far this year, more than 242,000 acres in France have been affected and 425,000 acres in Spain, and this year—a nearly sixfold increase over last year. The wildfires around Bordeaux are generating immense fire clouds that create their own wind and lightning that can spark fresh blazes. The Gironde fire is “unlike anything we have ever seen in France,” a regional prefect is quoted.


These Public Housing Pathways Are Made from Wine Corks

The new pathways at a public housing complex in Brooklyn are paved with cork recycled from bottles of wine and champagne served in New York City restaurants. Some 450,000 corks were ground up, mixed with an adhesive compound, and spread on the pathways and playgrounds at the complex. It was chosen as an environmentally sustainable, nontoxic and cooler alternative to conventional asphalt or rubberized surfaces often used on playgrounds and walkways. 


How Grapevine Rootstocks Affect Drought Tolerance, Yield and Canopy Growth

Tune in as Oregon State’s Patty Skinkis shares findings from her data collection at the university’s replicated rootstock trial. Planted by Patty’s predecessor in 1997 and including 18 rootstocks, it was “basically untouched since 2006,” she says. When growers approached her in 2020 about plant stress related to the three common rootstocks used across Oregon vineyards, the 25+-year-old research trial presented a “treasure trove” of mature rootstocks. Could Bioeconomy Unlock New Value from Existing Resources?

New Fungicide Combats Powdery and Downy Mildew in Vineyards Using Less Copper

On June 30, an amoeba lysate-based fungicide was approved in France for use against downy mildew and powdery mildew. Recommended for use after flowering, the dual-mode biocontrol agent inhibits fungal development (particularly on clusters) by preventing spore germination and release, and it also stimulates the vine’s natural defense mechanisms to prevent infection. The French wine industry worked with the French Vine & Vine Institute to secure emergency authorization for 120 days to enable spray trials with the material to enable its commercialization.


Could Sheep’s Wool Help Grow Better Wines?

Could sheep’s wool help grow better wines? An on-farm experiment at California’s Shannon Family of Wines is aimed at finding out. They’re piling waste wool from their resident flock of nearly 1,000 sheep under vineyard rows. Their hypothesis is that, as the wool breaks down, it can help lock in moisture, suppress weeds and slowly release nutrients into the soil to support healthy vine growth.


Climate Change Could Redraw California Wine Country Maps

Researchers modeled California’s current and future climate suitability for grape cultivation across nearly 400 locations in the state, primarily in the North Coast and Central Coast. They found that, by the end of this century, suitability for grape cultivation in historic wine production regions such as Napa, Sonoma, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara is likely to decline under worst-case climate change conditions. But Mendocino and Monterey Counties could become new wine powerhouses, due to an increase in climatic suitability for wine-growing and decrease in extreme fire-weather days.

Using AI to Improve Wine Grape Quality

They’ve designed a decision support system that uses AI, analytics and inexpensive moisture sensors connected to the Internet of Things to monitor the Crop Water Stress Index, a key component of vine water status, to help manage vineyard irrigation and optimize wine grape quality. 


Sky’s the Limit

Drones are taking on more tasks across thousands of vineyard acres in Oregon. They can autonomously fly 10 feet above the canopy, carrying 20 gallons of material, navigating by GPS and adjusting droplet size in real time, then return to base for a battery charge and resume precisely where they left off. Because they have no ground contact, drones don’t cause soil compaction. And they can navigate smaller or more challenging sites, such as steep slopes or wetter areas. 


OSU Study Tests Wine Grape Protection from Smoke

Could a barrier spray applied before smoke exposure help protect grapes, preserve wine quality and reduce the risk of crop losses after wildfire events? Oregon State University researchers tested four sprayable film formulations to find out. Chitosan, a natural material already used in winemaking as a fining agent, worked best. It adsorbed the volatile phenols that lead to smoky, ashy flavors and reduced diffusion through the film. So yes, with ongoing research, a chitosan-based sprayable barrier shows promise as a practical vineyard-level strategy for reducing smoke-taint risk. 


Toward a Vineyard Model for Low-Alcohol Wines: Severe Shoot Trimming Drastically Reduces Grape Sugar Concentration

In response to increasing demand for low-alcohol wine, a team of Italian researchers set out to learn whether grape sugar concentration could be effectively achieved in the vineyard. Their 2025 field experiment on Ortrugo (a vinifera variety) employed severe shoot trimming applied at specific phenological stages. Results show it successfully reduced grape sugar and wine ethanol without compromising yield, aroma or vine performance, supporting the potential of severe trimming for low-alcohol wine production and reduced-impact dealcoholization.


How Cracks in Dry Soil Impact Moisture Evaporation

Most hydrological models assume soil structure to be static, but when prolonged drought causes desiccation cracks, the proportion of sand, silt and clay that make up the soil change, and permanently affect its ability to retain moisture. A new study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign examines the evolution of soil cracking and how cracks interact with storage and movement of water in the soil. The findings can help improve hydrological models essential for water management.


Three-Cornered Alfalfa Hopper: Monitoring, Models and Management

The three-cornered alfalfa hopper (TCAH) is the only confirmed insect vector of grapevine red blotch virus, yet many growers don’t realize the pest is present until they see girdling on petioles. UC ANR North Coast IPM Advisor Cindy Kron shares findings from two years of weekly sweep-net monitoring that revealed TCAH adults are present well before budbreak, suggesting grapevines are not their preferred host. Legumes in ground cover are key feeding and reproductive hosts. Degree-day models may help growers better time tillage to reduce TCAH populations and limit grapevine red blotch risk. 


Napa Valley’s Grape Growers Struggle To Detect and Contain Red Blotch Disease

Although grapevine red blotch virus was first identified by UC Davis researchers in 2012, the Rutherford AVA in Napa Valley has suddenly become a hotspot for the disease. Infected vines can be asymptomatic for 2-3 years, a latency period that enables the scourge to spread throughout vineyard blocks undetected. Rogueing vines and replanting is the only effective strategy, but in premium Napa vineyards, it’s an expensive proposition. With no silver bullet in sight, growers are running their own on-farm trials using insecticides, hyperspectral cameras, sheep grazing and foliar clay applications. 


Texas Wine Grapes Launch to Space for Research Mission

Researchers from Texas A&M AgriLife launched hundreds of grape seeds to space. The seeds will spend six months aboard the International Space Station, where extended exposure to space radiation could induce genetic mutations. Upon return, they’ll be planted in the AgriLife Research vineyard. Scientists will study differences in plant growth, vine and wine grape performance, and genetics. The project could produce the first wine made from grapes grown from seeds that traveled through space.


Closing the Loop: Carbon Amendments & Vineyard Soils

New Zealand’s wine industry produces around 100,000 tons of grape pomace and pruning waste annually, and its forestry sector generates more than five million tons of wood residue. With no current high-value use, these waste streams represent only cost. But as rich sources of carbon, they can be made into biochar and compost for vineyard soils. Researchers at Lincoln University have been testing these waste products on Marlborough soils with promising results.
