ALUMINUM FOIL Can it Be Recycled or Not? No. Not in your curbside cart or bin. WHAT?? It’s aluminum and aluminum can be recycled! True, but only aluminum and steel cans can be recycled in your cart or bin, making aluminum foil a no-no. The recycling center where all of the aluminum and steel cans are sent is not equipped to handle aluminum foil even if clean and dry. IN THE COMMUNITY Wyoming Community Composting The City of Wyoming’s neat and tidy compost site is providing their community gardeners, and three restaurants (Gabby’s Café, Tela Bar + Kitchen, and Wyoming Community Coffee), no cost access to compost. The compost site diverts garden trimmings, coffee grounds, and fruit and vegetable scraps from the landfill to be transformed into a nutrient rich soil amendment for the community gardeners. Not only do the restaurants take pride in not landfilling their food scraps, but Gabby’s Café was able to cut their waste hauling service in half, while Tela Bar + Kitchen brings it full circle by growing some of their produce in the community garden that is nourished with the finished compost. Communities who want to replicate this program should contact Michelle Balz at 946-7789 for advice, training assistance, and funding opportunities.
