Watauga County Public Library

Dear Readers,

Happy November!

Veteran's Day is right around the corner so I wanted to bring our Veterans Voice video collection to your attention. This collection of local veteran interviews was coordinated by the late World War II local veteran Ken Wiley back in 2012. There are 54 DVDs of primarily World War II veterans. Mr. Wiley's objective was to capture the history and stories of these servicemen before they passed.

Check out a piece of local history and get to know your neighbors and friends who are local heroes.

And to all readers who are veterans, we thank you for your service to our country!

Thanks to the collaboration of several agencies and a generous donation from CIVIC Federal Credit Union, Western Watauga hosted an outreach program for Yancey, Mitchell, Avery and Watauga Headstart students. We held it in Avery County, and the YMCA of Avery County hosted the pop/rock children band Big Bang Boom! Lunch was provided by EFNEP (Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program) and NC Cooperative Extension's Avery Community Center location. 132 students along with 40 educators and volunteers danced the morning away and enjoyed a wonderful lunch. Each child left with a book in hand thanks to LSTA grant funding our Library received for outreach services!

Coming Home & Aging in Community: Learning from Friends in the Qualla Boundary

The vast majority of older adults want to “age in place,” but what does that mean? Many of our Indigenous neighbors have a different perspective on a person’s sense of place, community, and intergenerational wisdom. In recognition of National Native American Heritage Month, join AARP North Carolina and the Museum of Cherokee Indian for one or more of the sessions in this three-part virtual series. We aim for a deeper understanding of Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian history and respect for Indigenous points of view around aging, community, and place.

“Outlive: the Science and Art of Longevity” Book Club & Discussion Group

In his bestselling book “Outlive: the Science and Art of Longevity,” Peter Attia, MD, discusses the latest scientific evidence surrounding healthy aging and longevity. How can we use new findings to optimize our health and prevent some of the most common diseases of aging including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer’s? Michael Friedman, a recent graduate with a B.A. in neuroscience from Washington University in St. Louis, leads a virtual discussion about Attia’s strategies and specific steps we can take to improve our health and well-being. Please note that while reading the book is always encouraged, you’re welcome to attend these events either way.
