Working Together for Educational Equity

Dear Partners,

Transparent for newsletters

This past year has been one of transformation and momentum. With new leadership and a clear charge to invest in place-based strategies, our shared work has advanced into lasting practices and bold new initiatives.

Together, we achieved important milestones: the Educator Diversity Initiative evolved into a partner-led Educator Pathway, Early Learning and Family Engagement efforts expanded, and Success Networks are on the verge of being fully embedded in our high schools as long-term practices that deliver equitable outcomes in college and career.

The Canal Promise Neighborhood planning process is also bringing together voices and sectors that have not always been connected. This process reflects what we believe at our core: neighborhoods are the unit of change. In Marin, certain communities have been underserved for generations. They deserve a holistic, place-based approach that matches the depth of both the challenges and the opportunities ahead. When we center community, listen deeply, and act collectively, we can create the conditions for every child to thrive.

Looking forward, we will put this belief into action by strengthening cradle-to-career pathways in the Canal, Marin City, Novato, and West Marin. Aligning neighborhood strategies with countywide collaboration is how we will do right by all children. Together, we can build a Marin where every young person has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Now is the time to act, and your leadership, collaboration, and commitment to equity make this possible.

Grateful for your partnership,

Richard Raya, CEO

DATA

Marin is Bending the Curve on Educator Diversity

After more than a decade of little change, Marin’s teacher workforce is beginning to shift. New state data shows the share of teachers of color has grown from 11% to 13%, with even greater gains in some districts and schools. This shift signals real systemic change, driven by collective action to build pathways, remove barriers, and ensure educators of color can thrive in Marin.

PLACE-BASED / COLLECTIVE IMPACT

How the Canal is Building a Cradle to Career Model for Change

Through the Canal Promise Neighborhood, residents, schools, nonprofits, and government agencies are coming together to build a cradle-to-career system of support that drives student success and economic mobility. After months of planning, the work is now moving into action, creating a model for long-term change.

DATA

Fresh Look at Milestone Outcomes by Place

While our countywide Progress Report dashboard shows milestone outcomes by race and income, this spring partners gathered new data that shines light on educational outcomes for students of color in the communities where we work most closely. The findings reveal both bright spots and persistent inequities.

*Student-level data for Canal students is not currently available. As a result, we are not yet able to track progress on these college and career milestones, but many in the community see this as a critical next step.*

-Kindergarten Readiness data is not currently listed. Partners are developing a countywide dashboard to track this milestone more reliably.

This data is focused on race and place because they highlight differences in opportunity that countywide averages can hide. This lens helps us see where students face the greatest barriers and where added support can make the biggest difference.

Stay tuned as we continue working with partners to bring this place-based data into our public dashboard in the months ahead.
