Watch and Learn: Density in Historic Districts and Zoning Updates

Informational video on accessory dwelling units in Denver

The 3rd and final video in our informational video series on ADUs

Did you know that historic districts have more dwelling units per acre than the rest of Denver? Or that that the Denver Zoning Code was updated in 2023 to simplify and streamline rules for accessory dwelling units (ADUs)?

This week, in the third and final segment of Denver Landmark Preservation's video series on ADUs, you can learn how density relates to historic areas in Denver. The six-minute video also sheds light on how zoning rules have changed recently to make it easier to build ADUs in different types of neighborhoods across the city.

The video series is part of our ongoing update to the Landmark Design Guidelines, which will include a public meeting focused on ADUs one week from today, on Tuesday, February 27 (details below). If you are interested in attending the community event, we encourage you to take a few minutes to watch in preparation for next week's conversation on ADU-specific design guidelines for historic districts and landmark properties.

Next week! Our update to the Landmark Design Guidelines continues in 2024 with accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in historic districts and landmark properties. Join us in a community in conversation about what these new guidelines should look like later this month.

About Landmark Preservation

Landmark preservation is an important function of Denver Community Planning and Development. Denver City Council enacted the Denver Landmark Ordinance in 1967 to foster the protection, enhancement, perpetuation and use of structures and districts of historical, architectural, geographic and/or cultural significance.

Staff in our Landmark Preservation office and two landmark commissions carry out that mission through design review, historic surveys and landmark designations. Staff also assists owners of historic properties by providing guidance and resources for preserving, maintaining and rehabilitating historic buildings and properties.
