Watch out for domain registry expiration scams!

You’ll get them sooner or later...a notice by USPS mail or email that your domain name will expire soon, immediate action is needed! If this is not in your wheelhouse always check with your domain name registrar or a trusted web developer.

Below is an example of what looked like a legitimate expiration notice. We have blurred the domain and owner's name to protect the innocent...or rather the unknowing. That's what these scammers bank on, that you don't know this is a fabricated notification.
These companies deceitfully notify you in an attempt to transfer your business to them instead of continuing your relationship with your current registrar. We have highlighted in yellow some keywords that can tip you off to this scam (e.g., switch, transfer, choice).

Domain names do expire, but a quick call or email to your domain company can tell you exactly when it does. Keeping that information on-file in your records can also be a helpful strategy when determining if the domain name expiration notice is a scam or legit.

We have helped multiple businesses avoid these scams. HGD even has a legal firm client who fell for one of these false notices and unfortunately paid $360 for a domain renewal all for naught. Unfortunately they called us too late but were able to help them maintain their domain name ownership.
