Rum Runner, Ocean Avenue, Sea Bright NJ
Registration: On site Sunday - 6:30 - 8:30 a.m.
Presented by the  Shore Athletic Club , the  Jersey Shore Half Marathon  has a history that places it as one of the oldest distance events held in New Jersey and the surrounding area. The first Jersey Shore Marathon was held January 9, 1972. The growth of major fall marathons created a demand for quality half marathon distance races prior to the fall marathons and thus in1986 the Jersey Shore Marathon became the Jersey Shore Half Marathon. The Jersey Shore Half Marathon continues a great racing tradition established forty six years ago.

Meet New Member: John Gore
John Gore
Hello everybody, my name is John Gore. I have been running and racing for over 10 years now. I was bitten by the running bug in my early 40s, when
I decided I needed to get into shape. As my weight dropped-off (I shed 30lbs) and my mileage ramped up,
a work colleague (a keen runner) suggested I try a race. He recommended the GSC in Red Bank, then a 5-miler. I completed it in 33.10 and just loved the experience. I was totally hooked. Within a year, at the suggestion of my wife—thanks Catharine! —I tackled the Rotterdam Marathon for charity. We lived in The Netherlands back in the 1990s. . .and I remembered that Holland is very flat! I crossed the line in 3.34.06, but more importantly, I raised over $10,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Just over a decade later, and I am approaching my 100 th  race, and my 1000 th  run. My running log—sadly, I have mapped all 991 training runs and races—now extends to many volumes. My wife thinks I am nuts. My target each year is to run 1000 miles; about 20 miles a week. Injuries, heavy snow, and work commitments, can make it tough, but most years I hit it, or get close. I live in Leonardo within a few minutes of Huber Woods. With Hartshorne Woods and the Henry Hudson trail just up the road, I consider myself very lucky. But watch out for those dreaded deer ticks ! I am a veteran of Lyme Disease; no fewer than four cases or flare-ups since 2012!

Sunday morning, come rain, knee-deep snow or the occasional hurricane, is my main run of the week. This is typically 12-15 miles around the Navesink, Red Bank and Bay area. This is my time, and my chance to “de-stress“. . .and, I need it. I work in the busy, competitive and chaotic world of trans-Atlantic container shipping. Not a career path I would recommend to any sane person.

My race targets, at the tender age of 53, are to stay under 20 minutes for 5Ks, and just to enjoy 15ks and half-marathons. My favorite local races in the calendar are: The Pier House 5 (because everyone is there!) The E. Murray Todd, The HashaThon and The Navesink Challenge (15K of course!)

Oh, I should add I am British. I wear my Union Jack t-shirt at the SAC XC series! Given pending college visits with my daughter, I think I can hopefully manage Saturdays 1,4, 5 and 6!

I should have joined JSRC years ago. Go Runners! See you on the trails of Navesink!
New Members at our September Meeting:
Vickie Nelson : Vickie is in the nursing field needed an option to running. Started walking which led to running.
