Status of COVID -19 In San Francisco & How to Stay Healthy

As we enjoy the summer season, it is important to remember that COVID-19 has not taken a vacation.

This week's Online Briefing for Community & Faith Partners," hosted by the San Francisco Interfaith Council and supported by The Center at Sierra Health Foundation, began with a Reflective Moment with Dr. Jonathan Butler, Research Faculty, Family and Community Medicine, UCSF.

The event featured San Francisco Health Officer Dr. Susan Philip, MD, MPH, and San Francisco Department of Public Health Director of Communicable Disease and Control Prevention Dr. George Han, MD, MPH, who provided an update on the status of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases in the City, and shared recommendations on how to stay healthy.

Dr. Susan Philip, SF Health Officer

Susan Philip MD, MPH is the Director of the Population Health Division (PHD) of the San Francisco Department of Public Health and Health Officer for the City and County of San Francisco. PHD teams lead many core public health functions including disease surveillance and epidemiology, public health preparedness, disease intervention, public health laboratory services, environmental health inspections and community health partnerships. As Health Officer, her focus is on supporting all communities to have equal opportunities for good health.

Since joining SFDPH in 2005 Dr. Philip has previously served in several roles including as a Deputy Health Officer and as the Director of the Disease Control and Prevention branch in PHD overseeing population level clinical, biomedical, disease intervention efforts to reduce communicable and chronic diseases in San Francisco.

Dr. Philip received her M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis and trained as a resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago. After a M.P.H at the Harvard School of Public Health, she completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at UCSF. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco and has previously been an HIV primary care provider at San Francisco City Clinic.

Dr. George Han,

Director of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control

San Francisco Department of Public Health

Dr. George Han is the Director of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control at the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH).

In his role, he leads the Department's efforts in responding to and preventing over 80 different communicable diseases of public health importance, including respiratory viruses such as COVID-19 and influenza.

Before joining SFDPH, Dr. Han served as the Director of the Infectious Disease and Response Branch at the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health and as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer and medical epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

He completed a Master of Public Health degree at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, and undergraduate degree at Harvard University, and trained in residencies in pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and in preventive medicine at the CDC.
