Watch the Latest Bencher Insights

The upcoming election for the Law Society’s Board members (Benchers) will be held Nov. 14 – 21, 2023. To help lawyers better understand the role and experience of the Bencher table and answer some questions from those considering running in the upcoming election, the Law Society has assembled a brief video entitled Bencher Insights.

Watch the video to learn more.

In this video, we asked both current and former Benchers some of their more frequently asked questions, including why they decided to run, what surprised them about their experience and the skills they developed during their time at the Bencher table.

For the upcoming election, the Bencher table is seeking candidates who can bring their experiences to advance the strategic work of the Law Society.

The online nomination portal opens Oct. 3, 2023 and all nominations must be submitted by midnight, Oct. 17 to be eligible for nomination. For more information on how to vote or how to become a candidate in the upcoming election, visit the Bencher Election website.

Reminder: Update your Information in the Lawyer Directory

As mentioned in a previous eBulletin, the Law Society is closing the Lawyer Referral Service on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023 and will be directing members of the public to the Lawyer Directory to find a lawyer to assist them with their legal issue.

The Lawyer Directory is an online search tool that can be used to find a lawyer based on certain criteria. Lawyers can choose to publish their contact information in the Lawyer Directory, including their phone number and email. If you are a corporate or government lawyer or are not accepting new clients at the time, you may unpublish your contact information to avoid calls not relevant to your practice.

As per Rule 42, it is important for all Alberta lawyers to keep their contact information in the Lawyer Directory up to date and current so that potential clients can reach you. The Lawyer Directory reflects the information that lawyers input into the Lawyer Portal. Lawyers can change or update their contact information any time by making changes to their profile in the Lawyer Portal.

To update, publish or unpublish your contact information in the Lawyer Portal, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Lawyer Portal
  2. In the navigation, select My Profile, then Business Telephone/Email
  3. Add or update your phone and email information. By selecting the Default checkbox, the Law Society of Alberta will use this for communications. By selecting the Publish checkbox, you authorize the Law Society of Alberta to display your phone number or email on the Lawyer Directory. If you do not want your phone number or email publicly displayed in the Lawyer Directory, do not select the Publish check box.
  4. Click the SAVE button.

By enhancing the Lawyer Directory, we hope Albertans will be able to connect with lawyers quickly and easily across the province.

In addition, if you are not taking new clients but are interested in participating in pro bono legal services, we encourage you to reach out to the province’s Approved Legal Services Providers to find the right fit.

Visit our Find a Lawyer page for more information on the Lawyer Directory.
