Speaking to political health commentator Roy Lilley at the first ever Irish #HealthChat, Richard Corbridge (CIO, HSE and CEO, eHealth Ireland) made it clear that to succeed, the procurement for the national EHR programme must start before the end of the year. He explains the time is needed to build and test the technology, and engage users, in time for the completion of the first 'digital by default' hospital in Dublin.

Over the course of the evening Richard discussed the benefits of his plans to deliver a digital modernisation of the healthcare system in Ireland, but recognised it faced some challenges, the most prominent being the approval of the business case and release of funding from Government. Regardless, phase 1 of the programme has already begun, with the development of the shared care record and tools to enable integration.
Other areas Richard and Roy discussed included ensuring the security and protection of patient data as it moves around the system, the success of the Individual Health Identifier, the mobilisation of healthcare services and patient empowerment.
