Earlier this year, our parish held small-group sessions to listen to our parishioners’ experiences in the Church, in a process called a synod. The diocese collated the many responses into a summary of the themes that emerged. The summary, available in English and Spanish, was published in the July issue of The Southern Cross and is available on the webpage sdcatholic.org/synod. It is also on our parish website and attached to this newsletter.
These reports have already been sent to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Most dioceses in the country have followed a very similar process. This gives our bishops a picture of the experience and views of Catholics in our country.
I am very grateful to all our parishioners who participated. But, as I said at the time of the listening sessions, I think we need to look at the insights that were shared and determine how we can respond locally. In September, I will be convening an Advisory Group of staff and parishioners to discuss ways that our parish can respond to what we have heard. We will set some goals and propose some strategies for building on our strengths and improving areas that need to be strengthened. I will share more with you in the near future.
The Diocese of San Diego will also offer a second opportunity this fall for Catholics to be heard, this time via a survey. It’s particularly important for those who did not participate in the group sessions. If you already receive our weekly newsletter, the survey will be sent to you. Otherwise, you can sign up to receive the survey by notifying the parish office as soon as possible.
Your continued participation in this consultation is very important. The insights we gather will be used to respond to the needs of the faithful at all levels of our Church.
Every year we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15. This day commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time.
In the United States, whenever this solemnity falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated. This year, August 15 falls on a Monday. However, knowing that this is an important feast to many people, we will schedule two additional Masses for this day.

On behalf of the Eudist Fathers, we would like to announce the opening of our Eudist Retirement Campaign. Our twofold goal: thank the Fathers for all they’ve done and raise $40,000 towards retirement expenses. According to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, which evaluates our retirement funds yearly on the basis of financial stability, we are over 50% underfunded. While $40,000 is a small portion of the ultimate goal ($3.6 million), it will keep us on track to reach the final number in five years.
We have created the Tribute & Contribute campaign page on the Eudist website as a way for you to thank the fathers in your parish personally. We invite you to share your favorite photos, memories, and stories of Eudist Fathers who positively impacted your life! Submit your own post by clicking the link below.

Gospel Reading
Luke 12:32-48
You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.
Background on the Gospel Reading
Jesus' instructions on how to be ready for the coming judgment continue in the stories and sayings found in today's Gospel. We are not to be like the greedy rich man in last Sunday's Gospel who planned to store his great harvest in barns rather than share it. We are, rather, to share our wealth with those in need. The antidote for the anxiety brought on by the coming judgment is to relinquish our possessions and provide for the needs of others. Our treasure will be in heaven where it will not wear out or be destroyed.
The other major way to be ready for the coming judgment is to be watchful. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about watchfulness to begin making this point. We must be like servants waiting for the master's return from a wedding banquet, which, even now, can last for a few days in the Middle East. We must be watchful so that even if the master comes after midnight, we will be ready for him. This is what the coming of the Son of Man will be like.
Peter asks if this parable is meant for the apostles or for the large crowd that has gathered to listen to Jesus. Without answering Peter's question, Jesus responds with another parable about servants awaiting the return of their master. It begins with a question: “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time?” This parable adds to the theme of watchfulness; it explains how to wait and reminds us of the reward for the faithful follower at the heavenly banquet after the judgment. If it is addressed to the apostles, then it could also be addressed to leadership in the early Church. Either way, the parables reminds us that we should be found doing our jobs when the master arrives. If we are doing our jobs, our reward will be great. But if we relax, neglect our duties, and begin to act like the greedy rich man—eating, drinking, and making merry—we will not have a place in the kingdom. Watchfulness means living in such a consistently moral and obedient way that we are always ready to give an account to God of how we have lived.
Here is a sung version of this Sunday’s Responsorial Psalm written by Owen Aslott.
May He Rest in Peace
This weekend’s gospel admonishes us to prepare for the Lord may come at the time we least expect. We are sad to inform you of the sudden death of Fr. Robert Perelli, CJM of Buffalo, NY. Fr. Bob was a Eudist priest who visited our parish on many occasions. In 2020 he gave a series of talks on family as part of our Lenten program. At one time, he was the pastor of Ascension Parish in San Diego.
May the Lord grant him a peaceful rest and reward him for his many years of service to Christ and His Church.
