New Lab Equipment Keeps SCV Water’s PFAS Testing In-House, Saves Time and Money
SCV Water is one of only three water agencies in California – and 25 labs nationwide – that is certified by the state’s Environmental Lab Accreditation Program for PFAS testing
SCV Water continues its commitment to restoring groundwater affected by per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) chemicals. Recently, the Agency installed a Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometer to allow its team to test for PFAS in-house instead of sending it to an outside lab – saving time and money.

“Our customers continue to be our top priority,” said General Manager Matt Stone. “By taking quick action, we were able to develop PFAS treatment facilities and equip our onsite lab for in-house testing. These steps will benefit our long-term water supply, so we can provide safe, high-quality water to thousands of Santa Clarita Valley residents.”

Our Water Supply 101: State Water Project
SCV Water prepares for times of drought by maintaining a diverse water portfolio – this means that we have multiple sources of water we can draw from. This allows us to be flexible and resilient, especially as we plan for dry years.

In August we talked about banked water. Last month we covered groundwater. This month let’s learn about the State Water Project water. Constructed in the 1960s, the State Water Project is a collection of 700 miles of canals, pipelines, reservoirs and hydroelectric power facilities that deliver water from high in the Sierra Nevada mountains all the way to your tap. As state water reservoirs across the state experience historic lows, it is more important than ever to save water.

Water is first stored in Lake Oroville, located northeast of Sacramento. It flows through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, to the Harvey O. Banks Pumping Plant, where it begins its journey over 300 miles south in the California Aqueduct.

At the Tehachapi Mountains, the water is lifted more than 1,900 feet at the A.D. Edmonston Pumping Plant, then enters eight and a half miles of tunnels to cross the Tehachapi Mountains. From this point the water continues south through Quail Lake, Pyramid Lake and finally into Castaic Lake. Our share of the water is withdrawn from Castaic Lake through underground pipelines to supply the Agency’s treatment plants, the Earl Schmidt Filtration Plant and the Rio Vista Water Treatment Plant.

This water supply depends on several factors, including rainfall, snowpack, runoff, water in storage facilities, and pumping capacity from the Delta. The amount of water available for distribution is also influenced by the need to protect fish and wildlife, water quality, and environmental and legal restrictions. These factors determine how much the State Water Project is able to release to each of the contract agencies, such as SCV Water, each year. Sometimes we may get as much as 60% of our allotment, but during drought that could be 5%, or even zero.

In these dry years, we rely on other “buckets” from our portfolio, such as banked water and groundwater. So, when we say, “Every gallon saved today is a gallon that will be available next year!” – we mean that literally! Check for leaks, shorten your irrigation cycles and showers, and follow our other water use efficiency tips. That water you save will still be in our aquifers and banks to use next year.
SCV Water Wins its Second WaterSense® Excellence Award
Using the EPA’s “Water Score for Multifamily Housing” tool, SCV Water
helped save 75 million gallons of water in 2020
SCV Water has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a 2021 WaterSense Excellence Award winner for its Multifamily Apartment Program, which strives to improve water efficiency in multifamily housing.

“We’re honored to win our second WaterSense Excellence Award,” said Sustainability Manager Matt Dickens. “We’re so fortunate to have property management companies that are willing to partner with us in saving water in our valley.”

SCV Water Board to Continue Remote Meetings
AB 361 ruling allows for greater public participation
The SCV Water Board of Directors voted to continue remote meetings in accordance with Assembly Bill 361, which allows the continuation of remote board and standing committee meetings for the duration of the Governor’s proclamation of a state of emergency for COVID-19.

Remote meetings allow public agencies to conduct business safely, while maintaining access to members of the public.

“Since the pandemic began, our customers have been able to weigh in and make their voice heard about topics important to them through the use of technology,” said SCV Water Board President Gary Martin. “This action allows us to continue that practice under the latest guidelines.”

It may still be warm, but fall is here! With shorter days and cooling weather, it’s the perfect time to review your landscape irrigation. Adjust your watering from 3 days to 2 and, while you're at it, be sure your irrigation is set to run between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. This maximizes absorption and minimizes evaporation.
