Just as you would save money for a rainy day, SCV Water saves water for the “un-rainy” day – in water banks! A water bank is underground storage, where water can stay until it’s extracted for use. The water can make its way underground through spreading or recharge ponds, by seeping through sandy or porous soil.
We have several water banking projects located in Kern County, which we can access in dry years such as the one we are experiencing now. A series of pump stations and canals conveys the water to the California Aqueduct. From there, it makes its way to Castaic Lake where it continues its journey through our treatment and distribution system, right to your homes, businesses, and landscapes.
Banked water is safely stored until we need it, so it’s important to practice smart, water-saving measures, because every gallon of water we save today, is one that will be available next year.
Banked water is just one of several "buckets" in our water supply portfolio, which also includes groundwater, State Water Project water and recycled water. SCV Water is Drought-Ready, thanks to our long-term planning and investment into reliable water supplies, long-term water conservation programs, and efficient water use by our customers.
