Message from the General Manager
Valued SCV Water Customer:

Ensuring water that is safe to drink and reaches your home 24/7 is a top priority for our SCV Water team.

For nearly two years, our forward-thinking team has been hard at work tackling per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in our water supply to ensure that residents of the Santa Clarita Valley have a safe, reliable water supply.

PFAS are found in thousands of commonly used products, like non-stick cookware, food wrappers, firefighting foam and cleaning products. While we did not place these chemicals in our water, tiny amounts of PFAS have entered our water supply through manufacturing sites, landfills and wastewater discharge.

As we head into 2021, we are proud to share with you many milestones in restoring water quality in our community in this special edition of Water Currents:

  • Celebrating the completion of our first PFAS water treatment facility
  • Working on additional PFAS treatment facilities
  • Receiving statewide and regional honors for our ongoing PFAS community outreach
  • Filing a lawsuit against several large corporations for their roles in introducing PFAS into our water supply

We invite you to keep up-to-date at yourSCVwater.com/pfas, and we welcome any questions or comments you may have.

Sincerely,
Matt Stone
General Manager

What is PFAS and
How Did it Get in SCV Water's Supply?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals, including PFOA, PFOS and GenX, which is a chemical replacement for PFOA. For more than 70 years, PFAS have been manufactured and used in a variety of industries worldwide. These chemicals are prevalent in thousands of products we use every day, such as non-stick cookware, shampoo, food wrappers, firefighting foam, clothing, paints and cleaning products.

Like many communities throughout the nation, tiny amounts of PFAS are found in our water supply; water districts, like SCV Water, did not put these chemicals into the water, but over time they have entered our waterways through manufacturing, landfills and wastewater discharge. We are taking immediate steps to tackle and treat these substances through new strategies and proven treatment options.

SCV Water Celebrated the Completion of
its First PFAS Water Treatment Facility
SCV Water recently celebrated the completion of its first per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) water treatment facility during a virtual ribbon cutting. The facility, located adjacent to the Hart Fields parking lot, is one of the first PFAS treatment plants in California and restores groundwater wells affected by PFAS chemicals to the equivalent of 5,000 households annually.

Water from the new facility hit in December for Santa Clarita Valley residents.

Progress Continues on Additional Treatment Facilities
The construction of additional new water treatment facilities is moving full steam ahead. SCV Water is now soliciting construction bids for the second PFAS water treatment facility at the Valley Center Well. This is one of two facilities that will be operational in 2022. Combined, the additional treatment facilities will restore water about equal to the annual use of 4,000 families. A strike team of staff and other industry experts is working on a system-wide plan to prioritize and address the remaining 17 impacted wells.

SCV Water is committed to continuing to invest in our long-term water supply and provide safe, high-quality water to our residents.

SCV Water Files Lawsuit, Seeks Compensation for Costs and Damages Related to PFAS Contamination
This fall, SCV Water filed a lawsuit against several companies for their roles in introducing PFAS into the water supply in Santa Clarita.

The lawsuit alleges that large companies, including 3M Company, Chemours and DuPont, have known PFAS are toxic, but they have continued to knowingly manufacture, market and sell these products without providing a warning of the human health and environmental hazards.

SCV Water is seeking compensation for costs and damages related to PFAS contamination.

SCV Water Takes Home Top Honors for PFAS Outreach
Our ongoing communication efforts surrounding PFAS chemicals were honored with a PRism Award from the Public Relations Society of America – Los Angeles Chapter (PRSA-LA). The prestigious PRism award in the Crisis Communications – Government category honored SCV’s comprehensive, multi-year strategy for customer and stakeholder engagement across multiple communication platforms, including legislative policy development, community meetings, media relations, collateral development, website, video, social media and direct mail.

This marks SCV Water's second award for its PFAS outreach following this summer's statewide award from the California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO). Click here to read about the CAPIO award.
