C-43 Reservoir Construction Completed

As authorities celebrated the ribbon cutting of the C-43 Reservoir this month, Calusa Waterkeeper would like to share our position and some of the ongoing concerns with the project.

The Good: Overall, the benefit this reservoir will provide is primarily in the storage and timing of flows to the Caloosahatchee River and Estuary. It should significantly improve water manager's operational flexibility to control flows.

The Bad: Since conception, the reservoir design has lacked adequate storage and ideal treatment for improving the quality of the stored water. Instead of acquiring enough land for more natural solutions such as a stormwater treatment area or filter marsh, an Alum treatment was tacked onto the project in the final stages.

Our concern has long been that the potential for harmful algal blooms in the reservoir and the flocculant from the alum treatment could hamper water managers ability to discharge the water at certain times. It remains to be seen if the reservoir will be operated in accordance with Water Quality-based Effluent Limitations (WQBELS) established by the Clean Water Act.

In general, Calusa Waterkeeper has focused on advocating for water quality solutions and policies that prevent pollution from entering our waterways in the first place, rather than cheer on CERP's "big boxes and pumps" approach to storing more polluted water.

You can read more about our position on the reservoir through a number of documents found here: https://calusawaterkeeper.org/issues/c43-reservoir/

๐Ÿงซ Fecal Indicator Bacteria - May Results

CWK conducts Fecal Indicator Bacteria (FIB) water sampling at up to 32 sites in Southwest Florida each month. We publish the results to keep the public informed on potential risks. Enterococci bacteria found in water can cause gastrointestinal illness, infections, and rashes.

Results over 70 MPN would trigger an advisory from the Florida Department of Health if these sites were classified as "public bathing places." View the full results. (Please note conditions can change daily).

๐Ÿฅผ Thank You Mike...

We need to take a moment to highlight and thank one of our longtime unsung heros, volunteer Ranger and Lab Manager Mike Lee. For the last 7 years or so, Mike has been instrumental in our monthly FIB testing routine, helping not just collect samples, but operate our in-house lab on a regular basis. He's processed and documented thousands of bacterial results from around Lee County and helped grow and move our FIB lab over the years.

Mike and his wife Debbie recently sold their home and will be moving away from Southwest Florida. We wish them the absolute best and can't thank Mike enough for his years of valuable and dependable service, analysis, friendship and support. You will be missed!

๐ŸŒŠ Our Mission Depends on You

We cannot fulfill our mission of protecting and restoring the Caloosahatchee River from Lake Okeechobee to the coastal waters without the generosity of our supporters. Charitable gifts to Calusa Waterkeeper provide the means to continue our science-based water and air monitoring research; provide volunteer opportunities through our Ranger program and restoration projects, and support our advocacy and educational outreach efforts for clean, drinkable, fishable, and swimmable water.
