April Opportunities to Get Involved in Important Regional Water Supply Planning Efforts

SCV Water continues our robust planning work to ensure water for today and tomorrow by keeping our customers informed and engaged in the process. This month, we have several important virtual public meetings as well as opening the public comment period for the Draft Urban Water Management Plan.

  • Urban Water Management Plan’s Third Workshop Held
  • Groundwater Sustainability Plan Update
You’re Invited to Submit Public Comment on Draft Water Shortage Contingency Plan and Ordinance through April 12
The Water Shortage Contingency Plan is one of several important planning efforts SCV Water is undertaking to ensure sufficient long-term water quality and supplies. The draft plan and ordinance have been released for public review and comment. April 12 is the deadline to submit public comment before the Board of Directors holds its public hearing on April 26 from 6:30–8:00 p.m. to consider adoption of the items.

The plan includes an assessment of water supply reliability, procedures, monitoring and reporting systems, shortage response actions, communication plans, and compliance and enforcement procedures. It also evaluates financial, material and resource impacts of the plan.

SCV Water to release Draft Urban Water Management Plan for Public Comment
SCV Water’s held the third Urban Water Management Plan public workshop on March 22. Workshop participants learned how this updated plan assesses the long-term water reliability through build out of the Santa Clarita Valley (2050), as well as the area’s seismic risk and the mitigation plan to ensure continued water supplies after disruptive and catastrophic events such as earthquakes. If you missed the event, you can find a video of it, along with a meeting summary and presentation at: yourSCVwater.com/uwmp.
The public will be invited to review the draft plan between April 19 and May 19. The Board of Directors will hold a public hearing and take action on the plan on May 27 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

The plan will be posted online at: yourSCVwater.com/uwmp. Comments can be submitted through the website or sent via U.S. Mail.
Groundwater Sustainability Plan Process Now Underway
SCV Water is part of the Santa Clarita Valley Groundwater Sustainability Agency (SCV-GSA). Under guidance from the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), local water agencies are required to develop a plan to insure groundwater resources are sustainably managed. By January 2022, the SCV-GSA will develop a Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) tailored to the resources and needs within our community to maintain and improve resource management where necessary.

With the plan due to be adopted by January 2022, we are over halfway through an outreach and engagement process that started in January of 2020. The next virtual public workshop will be held on June 2, 2021, from 4:00–6:00 p.m. to discuss projects and management actions that will assist us in maintaining a sustainable groundwater supply today and in the future. For information on previous workshops, including project videos, presentations and other handouts, visit https://scvgsa.org/public-input/.
