Water-Wise Strategies for a Changing Climate

Over these summer months, many news stories report excessive heat and severe drought. The New York Times reports, “As a punishing drought grips parts of the world this summer, bodies of water have been drying up, exposing submerged World War II relics in Europe, several sets of human remains at Lake Mead outside Las Vegas, and even an entire village in Spain. The latest find as water levels fall: dinosaur tracks in Texas.” Water-conservation will remain a topic for generations to come, especially as the climate continues to change. Architects will continue to play a role in planning water-wise strategies for the building, its occupants, and the surrounding community.  We all should consider ways to reduce water use and protect water supply, water quality, and watershed resources. This means: understanding local and regional watershed protections, learning best practices to ensure the construction process does not impact resources, and ensuring the finished project maximizes water conservation efforts with understanding how the building’s occupants will use water.   Here are a few strategies...

Mundo Verde at Cook Campus: The First Green-Focused Charter School in DC Studio Twenty Seven Architecture designed the school with water-conservation and education in mind. A constructed stream bed encircles the elementary play area. With a hand pump that feeds the bed, the students learn about water cycle and water quality. Rainwater is collected from the roof and foundation tiles to flush toilets and water gardens. Each year, 300,000 gallons of potable water are saved.
