"The Covid Smooch"
Watercolor Demonstration by Barbara Gibson!
The photograph of the new pup up for adoption in the Boston Globe, August 30, 2020, caught my attention. I contacted the photographer, Gretchen Ertl, and asked if she would allow me to interpret the photo in watercolor. She graciously agreed.
Using the photo gave me an opportunity to use the technique Ann Hart taught: doing a grid; expanding the grid on drawing paper; drawing the subject; with a light box, transferring the image to watercolor paper.
The final drawing which was then transferred to 140lb cold press watercolor paper.
First wash; light coming from left; changed hair on figure
Added detail to figure.
Used photos of my dog, Gemma, to adjust the coloring & markings on pooch. Added dark to lower background.
More detail including adding Gemma’s tail; collar and leash as accent.
Finished piece.
