Flamborough E-NEWS
Although Councillor Partridge has posted this information through E-NEWS before, she felt it was important to provide a fulsome recap of the development plans currently happening in Waterdown. Please read below for more information.

Around 2002, developers approached the City of Hamilton wanting to build new subdivisions in various areas of Waterdown.  The City of Hamilton turned down the applications and the developers went to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) to appeal the decision. The OMB ruled in favour of the developers, granting them permission to build, even though there was not sufficient road and traffic infrastructure in place. Due to the OMB ruling, the City has no authority to stop the development or to phase it in. Since Councillor Partridge has been in office for the past eight years, she has worked relentlessly in hope of expediting the much needed infrastructure.

As a result, Waterdown has significant new subdivision developments, in particular south of Dundas Street East (Mountainview Heights), north of Dundas Street East (Mattamy) and north of Parkside Drive, from Centre Road west to Mosaic Drive and north to the Waterdown Drive North (new bypass).

Currently, Parkside Drive is undergoing major urbanization this year from Hollybush Drive /Sadielou Boulevard to Main Street North (2.3 km). The upgrade includes widening to three lanes with a continuous centre turn lane, new sidewalks, boulevards and bike lanes, two crosswalks by the high school and three new stoplights. There will be a crosswalk at Braeheid and Wimberly, and one new stoplight will be at Hollybush/Sadielou. Intersections will include wide ladder crosswalks. In accordance with the City's standard, new lighting (LED lights) will be added along the new Parkside road and will greatly improve safe walkability. In terms of the road itself, there will be new bike lanes and 6.5 foot wide sidewalks on both sides, with a dedicated centre left-turn lane down the middle of the road.

The two existing signalized intersections, (1) Keewaydin St./YMCA entrance and (2) Hamilton Street North/Parkside Drive will be modified to accommodate the road widening.

Regarding the turning lanes, they will be paint ed per the City’s standard with directional arrows, and will look similar to the photo below.
Further upgrades include:

New corridor East-West Bypass
The new bypass construction will go from Highway #6 across the top of the new developments on Parkside Drive, called Waterdown North to cross Hamilton Street to connect down to Parkside Drive behind Alexander Place. Construction will be done in phases as there will be significant changes to Parkside Drive from the CNCP tracks to Avonsyde Boulevard, which will then connect to Dundas Street. Portions of the bypass are currently under construction within the new developments scheduled for completion in 2020.

New North-South Bypass corridor
The north-south bypass corridor includes completion of Burke Street through to Mountain Brow Road, widening of Mountain Brow Road to Waterdown Road. Waterdown Road will be widened as the north-south bypass corridor down to the QEW interchange up to Waterdown at Mountain Brow, and will be changed significantly to include additional lanes, sidewalks, boulevards, bike lanes etc. Construction is estimated to start late 2019 into 2021.

Replace Dundas Street CNCP bridge and widening to Brant Street
The CNCP bridge just east of Mill Street on Dundas Street is owned by CNCP - not the City of Hamilton. CNCP requires the bridge to be replaced within the next 5 years- this will require the road closure to replace the bridge. The other road construction above needs to be completed first to provide alternative routes around Waterdown. Timing is approximate for each one.

Several Public meetings on the above projects were held during 2002 to 2007 as well as resident committees regarding the road design for each project. The approximate cost of project files Councillor Partridge is currently working with development staff is over $100 million. Traffic issues around Waterdown will be much more manageable for residents over the next few years as we go through these phases of growth in the community.
