Undergraduate Elective Capacity

URGENT CALL FOR ELECTIVE CAPACITY

The Undergraduate Medical Education program has an urgent and unprecedented need for first-year elective capacity. Electives are a core curricular component of the program; inability to provide adequate experiences puts UME accreditation in jeopardy and could result in delayed graduation of our students.


We are in urgent need of at least 50 spots per 2-week rotations for:

  • July 3 - 16, 2023
  • July 17 - 30, 2023
  • July 31 - August 13, 2023.

Department of Family Medicine, Full-Time Faculty Member

The Department of Family Medicine welcomes Waterloo Regional Campus' very own, Dr. X. Catherine Tong (Emergency Medicine) as a full-time faculty member as of March 2023.


Dr. Tong has been a member of the department since 2014 and has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence. She has led academic programs and has generated scholarship to address difficulty problems in faculty development.

Regional Education Lead, PG Internal Medicine

The Waterloo Regional Campus of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, McMaster University is recruiting for the position of Regional Education Lead (REL) - PG Internal Medicine.


The primary goal for the postgraduate regional program is to ensure high-quality educational experiences for psychiatry residents within the Waterloo-Wellington Region. The goal of the training program is to produce psychiatrists with outstanding knowledge and expertise who demonstrate excellence in all of the CanMEDS roles.

The Waterloo Regional Campus is proud to present the Faculty Development Conference Half Day 2023 on Saturday, May 13, 2023.


This year, the McMaster University, Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine - Waterloo Regional Campus is partnering with the KW & Area Family Medicine Residency Program to present our faculty development conference half day.


The faculty development conference half day is open to ALL faculty and residents and will follow a morning of family medicine CME. Participants are invited to attend both sessions, just the faculty development portion, or just the family medicine portion.


This program is accredited for up to 2.75 Mainpro+ credits and MOC Section 1 hours.


Learning Objectives:

  • Outline undergraduate and postgraduate teaching opportunities at WRC, review educational leadership skills, and discuss leadership opportunities at the Waterloo Regional Campus
  • Define mentorship, distinguish between mentorship and coaching, and discuss features, characteristics, and barriers to effective mentorship.

This conference is designed for both new and returning faculty to prepare you with the information and skills needed to effectively facilitate Problem-Based Learning tutorials and clinical skills sessions in Medical Foundations.

  • Over 85% of learners are currently involved in some type of research or scholarly activity
  • There are 20+ research projects that varies in areas including psychiatry, sports medicine, immunology, anesthesia, pediatrics, neurology, pharmacy, pain, and medical education. This can include quality improvement, needs assessment, cohort studies, chart reviews, systematic reviews and educational resource development
  • In 2022, two WRC medical learners won McMaster Medical Research Excellence Scholarship in a cross-campus competition
  • Several student-authored conference presentations occur every year and on average about 1 student-authored peer-reviewed journal article

WRC Research

The David Braley Primary Care Research Collaborative (PCRC) at McMaster University's Department of Family Medicine advances knowledge to strengthen and advocate for primary care practice, education, and policy through proactive research relevant to the issues of today.


The PCRC works to:

  • Build capacity for primary care research, including training, resources, mentorship opportunities
  • Generate knowledge through innovative research programs that inform primary care practice, education, and policy
  • Facilitate integration of new and existing knowledge to clinical practice, education, and primary care systems and policies
  • Enhance health equity by developing and supporting a culture and approach to primary care research that incorporates, values, and enhances equity for Indigenous, racialized, and other equity-deserving groups


At the PCRC, we define research broadly to include all types of inquiry - from applying existing knowledge in new and creative ways to generating knowledge through grant-funded research projects. All these forms of inquiry allow us to better understand the world around us, solve problems, inform decisions, foster innovation, and promote critical thinking.

Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) Program

MacEssentials Tutor Training

We are excited to announce the latest addition to our MacEssentials Tutor Training: our new e-modules! These asynchronous modules offer academic credit and are designed to complement our revamped virtual workshop, now offered four times a year and shortened to 90 minutes. Our e-modules are available to both new and experienced tutors and can be accessed here. Aspiring tutors are required to complete MacEssentials Tutor Training as a prerequisite to joining the UGME program.

DIRECTOR, CAREER DEVELOPMENT

The MD program is seeking a faculty educator and leader to serve as Director, Career Development. The Director of Career Development will be responsible for coordinating, developing and overseeing formal and informal educational programming related to career exploration and development within the distributed medical education network of McMaster's MD Program. The Director will work with MD program Career Counselors, Chair of Student Affairs and Chair of Electives to ensure an integrated, programmatic and cohesive approach.
