Hello to all of my happy readers!!!
January was a blur. I genuinely feel like I said "Happy New Year!" and then it was February...How oh how the time does fly. My family's time in Mexico during the store break was exceptional. I read two books and really did a great deal of nothing. I watched my kiddo splash and swim in a pool.
February brings so many good feels to my heart. I know Valentine's Day is commercial and I DON'T CARE! I love it. I love the reds and pinks, I love the hearts and the extra hugs, and the little candies with sweet sentiments on them. All of it makes me smile. My hubby and I met on February 15th nine years ago, so it remains a very special date for us. What can I say...I love LOVE.
I have always been the parent who makes little love care packages for my kids and writes cards to them, and who gives them their favorite candies and of course a book or two. What do I like to get for Valentine's Day? Well, books of course. 😍💕
I continue to make the commitment to support and show up for all community in any way that I can. We are so happy to be part of "Dine and Shop to End Homelessness" again this year. Last year we gave 100% of our day's proceeds, and we will strive to do the same this year. I am in awe of the good work done by the Family Center.
I read some fun things this month--I read Cinder, by Marissa Meyer, a young adult novel. It is a retelling of the Cinderella story. It involves a cyborg, and there's a plague. I really, really enjoyed this story. I could not put it down. I can totally see why teens love this series so much. I also read The Briar, by Craig Wesley Wall, and it was horror genre. I have read from him before. His writing is good and the storytelling never lets me down. It was creepy, and scary...but I could have handled a little more. If you like darker books, he is your guy! I also read Love, by Roddy Doyle. This was a VERY different book for me. It is set in Irish pubs, which have my heart, as I have drunk in many a pub in Ireland. It follows two long-time friends, and they reconnect after many years having not kept in touch, and some of the information they share with each other shocks the other friend. I appreciated the honest look at life, and friendship. I also read a large portion of Alan Cumming's memoir...I will comment next month on that one. This month I will be reading Waterbury Winter, by Linda Stewart Henley--I have the advanced reader from the author, so I will report on that one as well.
Please stay safe, happy, and healthy...Happy Reading!!
Brandy~

Watermark Book Club is on Zoom! It is a closed book club, and you can let us know if you would like to be added to the waitlist. In the meantime, feel free to read along with us! This month we are discussing On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, by Ocean Vuong. Here's what Brandy has to say about the book:
|
|
"This book is so beautiful, exquisite, raw, and heartbreaking that you question: how is it NOT a memoir? The main character, Little Dog, is writing this letter (the book) to his mother, who never learned to speak English. It is his family's story of growing up in Vietnam, and it is the story of this boy's life--a very good glimpse of what he believes are the things that made him and the way he sees the world around him--the good, the bad, and the other. It is ultimately a love letter to his mom--it's a coming of age story, it's his coming out story, and it's the immigrant story."
