Notes From the Boss Lady

We have been so busy finishing our store inventory, it took us a full three weeks. Thank you to everyone who came out and wished us well while we worked--you lifted our spirits more than you know. January for us was riddled with colds and stuffed noses, and we are so grateful that we are all on the mend. February is such a treasured time for me, I love the sweet love notes, Valentine's Day (not the super commercialized variety) but the sweet love one. My hubby and I have our First-Time-We-Met anniversary. I also love another excuse to leave my kiddos some notes/cards. February brings some change for the store. I am meeting with all of my book reps to order our new books for Spring 2020--it is such an exciting time seeing all of the NEW books. I have already read 3 books this year, wahoo! I am starting American Dirt tonight, so please stop in and ask me about it.
Find Your Book Club Tribe!
This is in the works here at Watermark! We are working to become a bookstore listed on Read Tribe--an incredible resource for connecting bookstores, book clubs, and members of the community! It allows you to find bookclubs in your area, to list your book club, and to connect your local bookstore as a resource for purchasing your book club books! Check out Read Tribe at https://www.readtribe.com/ and keep an eye out for us!
Credit and Debit Card Fees
Brandy, throwing money in the garbage
With the new year, we are making some small, educated changes around the store, to help us be the best book store we can be! Starting April 1st, we will be charging a .50 cent card fee for transactions under $10.00. This will help with the high cost of operating these machines. There will be a two month grace period before this change takes effect. Fear not--usually a chocolate will get you to that $10.00 mark! Thank you for supporting your independent bookstore!
Best of Anacortes
It's that time of year again! Watermark Book Co. has been nominated for THREE categories for the Anacortes American Best of Anacortes: Most Community-Minded, Best Bookstore, and Best Giftshop! We are so grateful to our community for this! Voting goes until February 9th at 11:59 PM, so go to https://www.goskagit.com/anacortes/bestof/#// to vote for us!
This Just In
We are very excited about new stuff in the store! First of all, we have two new flavors of Theo's chocolate: dark chocolate peanut butter & jelly cups, and milk chocolate coffee & cream cups! We have new holiday cards out on our seasonal spinner, so come by for all of your Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Easter needs! And, of course, books!!! Come check out all of our new paperbacks!

New and Noteworthy
The Rabbit Hunter , by Lars Kepler

The latest book in the Joona Linna series is as creepy and suspenseful as ever! This time, Joona and Saga must track down the "Rabbit Hunter," a killer out for revenge.
American Dirt, by Jeanine Cummins

This book is an Oprah Book Club pick, and it is inspiring a LOT of conversation. It is the story of a mother and son as they flee Mexico for the United States.
The Magical Language of Others , by E. J. Koh

In this memoir, the author translates and confronts the letters her Korean mother wrote to her after abandoning her and her brother in California.
A Long Petal of the Sea , by Isabel Allende

This is the newest book from Isabel Allende, and it follows Roser and Victor, who are forced to flee their home and marry against their will.
Watermark Book Club
This month, Watermark Book Club read The Great Believers , by Rebecca Makkai. Here's what Brandy has to say about it:

"Man oh man, this book was awesome! It was sad and beautiful. This book is a dual timeline--it starts in 1985 Chicago at the height of the AIDS epidemic and it surrounds a wonderful group of friends. The other timeline is set in 2015, 30 years later. The main character is in a "monogamous" relationship, and neither partner has the virus. Yale really starts to see all of his friends and loved ones die. There is a woman--Fiona, the sister of one of his first friends to die--who is there for them all the way. It is a great cost and sacrifice throughout her whole life--but she is a great believer! Yale's world comes crashing down and he experiences great turmoil. The book has several interesting turns--there is a great deal about art and galleries, and a lot about legalities and AIDS. 4.1/5 "
