Notes From the Boss Lady

Hello my happy READERS! So much has been happening around here. I wish I could say that it is all happy and easier here... but this would not be true. The work is hard and the hours are long- but I am sooooo incredibly happy to be a part of this well-read community. I am so very happy to have new and fresh art on the walls! We are currently gearing up, buying, ordering and unpacking new merchandise for the store for the upcoming season- we are so very excited.

This week has continued to bring very interesting and even combative conversations with customers... so much so, I think I may do a Facebook Video for it. I thought for now... I might cover some of the most wild misconceptions that we keep encountering. Here goes:
  • No! We do not order our books from Amazon, we have an independent book warehouse that is in Oregon, and that is how we are able to get our books sooooo quickly.
  • If you forget your mask at home, do NOT walk into our store and tell us about it... you may ask for one of our disposable masks BEFORE you enter and we will happily assist.
  • If you enter the store wearing a mask PLEASE wear it properly for the entirety of your visit... and if you don't and we correct you- this does not give you the right to get nasty with us.
  • We understand how hard it is to wear a mask for long periods of time. We wear ours for 40 hours a week- not including our own lives outside of the store. I also have PTSD, depression, anxiety and asthma and I still wear mine... and it IS hard- I feel for those who suffer... I wear mine for YOU with love.
  • I understand that you may have JUST put hand sanitizer on your hands at another store or in your car just now... please just start fresh with us. We like for all of our customers to truly feel like their safety is paramount to us.
I appreciate all of you and I would not be here if it were not for you. Thank you for always being here. I posted these comments above to show what we deal with on a daily basis. These conversations are happening often... too often. I just had a customer today totally disrespect me and take her mask off before she even exited the store because I had asked her to sanitize her hands when she entered. It is really unfortunate and I wish it would stop happening. I am giving each of you a virtual hug.

Facebook Live Author Event
Tuesday, September 15th 5:00pm
Brandy will chat with local author Linda Henley about her newest novel, Estelle! Please join us for this author event on Facebook Live! You will have an opportunity to ask the author questions by commenting on the video, or emailing us your questions in advance at [email protected]. If you're unable to watch it at 5:00pm, don't worry--the video will stay posted on our Facebook page!

Estelle is a dual timeline- one is set in the 1870s in New Orleans around Degas and his family, and the second is set in the 1970s featuring Anne, an art museum intern who has a special connection to Degas.

"In this engrossing debut novel, Linda Stewart Henley intertwines the two stories, told a century apart, with themes of romance, familial loyalty, questions about social equity, and a passion for art and preservation."

Watermark Book Club
While our book club is on hiatus, we are taking the opportunity to share with you what we're reading as a team! This month, Jaycee is sharing with us how much she enjoyed The Nickel Boys, by Colson Whitehead!

The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead is a fantastic and heartbreaking story set in the Jim Crow 1960s. Based on a real reform school for boys, the main character, Elwood, is a bright kid who ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is sent to the Nickel Academy, where he shares his experiences with abuse by the staff and the loss of his friends. The last part of the book tells about his life years after the Nickel Academy and what his life is like then. This book is a hard read, but it’s so important. The school this book is based on closed in just 2011 and it’s eye opening to see what these children endured in their time there.
