Do Better Philanthropists Provide
Better Philanthropy?
During this holiday season, philanthropists across the globe are being asked to give more and give well.
Contributing to Carleton University's new PANL Perspectives in a series on philanthropy and ethical theory, Watermark's Dr. Sharilyn Hale shares some insights about her work with generous people and families, and the four ways a philanthropic advisor can support more informed giving.
"It’s a thrill when a philanthropist’s generosity becomes a declaration of their character,
of how they view their role in the world, and their relationship to their wealth..."
PANL Perspectives is a new initiative of Carleton's Masters in Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership program (where Sharilyn serves on the Advisory Council), providing the latest intel on philanthropy and nonprofits in Canada. Explore their free newsletter.

Global Peer Network Increases
Its Presence in Canada
The Philanthropy Workshop is a global community of high- and ultra-high-net-worth individuals who share a deep commitment to social change through trust-based strategic philanthropy and social investing, drawing on a 25-year history of education, peer learning, and action. Established in 1995 by The Rockefeller Foundation and in partnership with the Hewlett Foundation and the Institute for Philanthropy, TPW has become the leading philanthropic network in the world.
It is notable that the Current Chair of TPW is Canada's Lisa Wolverton of the Wolverton Foundation. She shares, “TPW has given me the tools and the roadmap for strategic philanthropy as well as a global community of peers; individuals and families who lead with curiosity, humility, and purpose. Together, we commit to addressing the root causes of global problems, deploying resources quickly and effectively, and demonstrating what works in philanthropy and social investing. No matter how you plan to give, or what amount of capital, TPW can help you do it well.”
As it grows its presence in Canada, TPW is launching a series of roundtable discussions in early 2021 for those interested in learning more about social investment in Canada and the fundamentals of strategic giving. Contact Tony Tolentino for details.

GENEROUS FAMILIES AND GIVING: GOVERNANCE AND LEGACY
Sharilyn recently joined Steve Legler and Let's Talk Family Enterprise to discuss the challenges enterprise families face in approaching their charitable giving, and how they can get organized, come together, and give in ways that support the community while creating a meaningful family experience.
Three key insights from the conversation?
- Good giving governance practices can deepen a family's ability to work together and strengthen their other forms of family governance;
- Philanthropy can provide leadership opportunities for family members not involved in the family business; and
- A family's approach to giving should have the capacity to evolve over time, as the family, and its communities, evolve.
