AMBASSADOR
Waterville UMC News!
November 2018
Dear Church Family,

All around us change is happening. Some of these changes bless our very soul others elicit grief and a feeling of sadness. Looking around this rainy morning I am reminded that change is going to happen and I have no power to change that fact. The leaves are changing and for a few short weeks the colors are amazing. Then, the leaves fall and we are left with the bare dark trees. There is less daylight and it is getting colder neither of these changes fills me with great joy.

Yet, during these reflections this scripture comes to mind, “So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” Just like my grieving the changes that take place every fall I realize my perspective is from a human point of view. This scripture describes for us what life can be for the follower of Christ that allows the Holy Spirit to change our perspective from human to Godly.

When we learn to depend upon Christ everything becomes new. We are reminded in God’s creation as next spring there is a new beginning; the trees bud, flowers bloom, the temperature rises and the days get longer. The same is true in our relationship with God. We will go through different seasons. Yet, by faith we know that God will always bring us to a new beginning. This new beginning is in God’s time which usually frustrates us from our human perspective.

Our congregation is in the midst of one of these seasons of change and the vision of God’s new beginning in our midst. One of these changes is in our annual stewardship campaign. This year our commitment cards are different. Our commitment is from the position that all we do is part of being faithful stewards. When we bring our commitments to God they will include where we believe God is asking us to serve as well as how God desires for us to give.

God’s timing is almost never convenient for us. After the first of the year we will launch our
New Beginning capital campaign. This is another new begging for our congregation as we strive to live into God’s vision for serving our entire community through our faithful service of God and a new location from which to worship, learn and serve.

Finally, the timing that is most difficult is February 23-26. This is the scheduled special General Conference in which the United Methodist Church will decide what our policies will be in the future in dealing with the ordination and appointment of members of the LGBTQ community. There is a real possibility that a division will take place in the United Methodist Church. Please pray for God’s Holy Spirit to lead this meeting. Let’s not let this issue become a distraction that can be used to derail what God is leading us to do and who is leading us into a New Beginning .

May the Lord bless you as the Holy Spirit leads us out of the “old life and into a new life” in Christ,

Pastor Mike
